How do I change my default browser when Safari won't open? (crashes)

I have not been able to get Safari to run, it crashes when trying to open it. I was going to change to a different default browser until I figured out a fix or had time to reinstall the OS (the solution offered by apple tech support) but the only way I know of to change the default browser is a preference inside safari - one that I can't get to. Does anyone know what file I can manually edit on my machine to change that preference setting without opening Safari? Many thanks in advance!

Camino is one browser where you can change the default settings:

In Preferences -- the main pane.

Another thought.

Are you using any third party safari apps or plug-ins. If so, then this should be high on the list of things that would make Safari crash. If you have any installed, try removing them, reinstalling Safari and restarting your Mac.

P.S. I'd still ensure you have verified/repaired your disk permissions using Disk Utility. It's a good weekly/monthly maintainence procedure to keep your Mac healthy and last longer.

Episcript,

Do you know where I can set the default browser preferences in firefox?

Hotkeyz,

yes I have tried the things you mentioned, see earlier thread, "my safari won't open (Crashes) after installing apple update"
I have been told by apple that I need to reinstall my OS. In the interim I just want to use another browser. Other browsers work fine, except if i want to click a link in email for example, it tries to open safari, so i want to change specifically to firefox as my default, but couldn't find a preference in firefox to do that. I was hoping i could manually modify a plist file... any ideas? Should I use camino or opera or something other than firefox?

Hi,hotkeyz,

You know deleting Safari should really be a last resort, the link you point to does not tell one how to the then, extract safari from the Cd. Do not recommend that. The link is a an update for Safari 1.3.2. The op is using 10.4.6 and his / her Safari is be version 2.0.3, which came bundled in the os update.

Please try your Suggestion out on your own computer, before posting your recommendation.

Thank-you
Eme

Hello Dorsey

Camino
Omniweb
Opera
Shira & Firefox

I am using Shira & it is a very fast browser, however i would run permissions repair & a disk repair, first if Safari can not be opened long enough to set the default ( You set the default In Safari Preferences->> General tab-> Default Web Browser:)
Are you using IE or other browser to download the browser of your choice?

Regards,
Eme

Eme

Thanks so much for that post. I agree, it takes a lot of work to keep a computer running properly. It is very serious when people give advice that could potentially cause further and expensive damage to a system.

With that said, after I deleted my safari, I now know that this wonderful forum is open to anybody's suggestions.

Plus, I'm glad that I found you again. I mean, I was looking for the first posts that I had read at the beginning when I first had this problem, and since I haven't been able to post, I lost tract of your posts.

Can you please help me get my safari back? Thanks so much in advance.

K.S.

Thank you, you have solved my problem User uploaded file

I downloaded the RCDefaultApp using firefox, (I downloaded MisFox too but haven't looked at it), and the pref pane works great.

If i figure out how to fix Safari without re-installing my OS I'll post.

Thank you everyone for your help, I also see that there are browsers out there that I had never even heard of... I look forward to testing these out!

hotkeyz was offering advice in hopes of helping, in the end the personal
responsibility lays with the user. Try not to panic and throw the baby out with the bath water. Believe me I know how hard it can be to stay calm in some situations with computers. I have seen crashes of most apps, kernel panics system folders with out icons, strange icons instead.. dying HD ( I thankful head backed up ) the list goes.
# 1 important fact: If we Backup our data then what ever disaster will be can not take our stuff with it.

Kind regards to all here.
