Hey there. Rewiring stuff to close with an escape key will not work in OS X. However you CAN assign other keyboard shortcuts to this function from within the System Preferences pane. Bring up your System Preferences, and click on the Keyboard and Mouse settings. There is a Keyboard Shortcuts tab that allows you to add your own shortcuts. You can go to the bottom of the list, and pick Applications, and press the + key. You then select the application you wish to add a new shortcut. Enter the exact text of the menu item you wish to activate with the keyboard shortcut in the first text field. THEN enter the keyboard combination, function key, whatever into the second field.

Although you can't map ESC, you can map a function key to do this close function in iChat or whatever chat client you are using.
