iTunes 11.1 on Windows 8 X64 doesn't detect iPhone 4S

Set up - Windows 8 machine X64

Had iTunes 11.0.5

When tried to update to iOS 7 for my iPHone 4S, it kept on asking to update to version 11.0.5

Searched online and found a link to iTunes 11.1 for X64 platforms uploaded 5 hours ago today.

Downloaded and install the latest version.

Now I have the latest iTunes with Radio, but it fails to detect my iPhone.

I wish all end to end scenarios were tested 😟

Any ideas what I can try? tried restarting (both PC as well as the iPhone)

Re: Upgraded to iTunes 11.1 and now it won't recognize my iPhone

I was able to fix it! iTunes can now see my iPhone5.

I followed these instructions:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538

And re-installed the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver".

  • Right-click the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
  • Click "Browse my computer for driver software."
  • Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
  • Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)
  • In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
  • Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
  • Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).
  • Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
  • Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.

I am having similar problems.

I bought a Dell XPS 27 Windows-8 desktop, and after hours and hours invested in trying to get the PC itself as well as iTunes 64-bit 11.1.1 to recognize my iPhone4S, neither the PC nor iTunes will recognize it. I have never had any trouble getting both to recognize my iPod. It is only the iPhone that they will not recognize. I repeatedly followed the various instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 as well as every other bit of advice I could find by googling around. I tried the Device Manager steps in TraderKK's Sep 18, 2013 posting, but when the iPhone is plugged into the USB there is absolutely no entry anywhere in the device manager that looks anything like an Apple device. When I unplug and replug the iPhone (waiting up to 10 seconds), no changes occur in the device manager listing. I tried the suggestion about taking screenshots on the iPhone then plugging it in and making the system think the iPhone was a camera. The problem is that although there is an Apple Mobile Devices service running (yes, I tried restarting it, re-installing iTunes, rebooting, every combination you could imagine), there never seems to be a USB driver or any other driver that pops up that could possibly represent the iPhone. And when I plug the iPhone in and bring up Internet Explorer, the plugged-in device is not recognized as a new drive.

On my old Dell Optiplex Windows 7 desktop with iTunes 11.1.0.126 (a PC I was hoping to replace), I have never ever had any issues getting the system to recognize the iPhone. I would plug it in and Windows Explorer would let me drill down to find and copy my camera roll, for example. Also. plugging the iPhone in would automatically pop up iTunes.

I would appreciate any advice on how to fix this.

... I forgot to mention that yes I tried three different iPhone 4S USB cables. I can take the exact same cable and plug it into my Windows 7 desktop USB port and instantly the PC and iTunes both recognize it. It cause iTunes to launch. I then plug the same cable into the new Windows 8 system and I get nothing.

I found the solution for my problem. It seems to be a problem with the female connector on the iPhone 4S itself. I discovered this by accident: I dropped it while it was plugged in to the Windows 8 machine, and for the very first time, I heard that water-splash sound indicating that the computer recognized a new device. Then it immediately made the disconnect sound. I picked it up, unplugged and replugged several times without success. But when I applied downward pressure on the connection at the iPhone, it finally became recognized. For the first time, Apple's USB driver was loaded up. I cannot explain why I never had this problem when plugging it into the Windows 7 machine, bad connector or not, even when going back and forth between the two machines as I described in previous posts. However, the fact that I never had a problem connecting my iPod to Windows 8, which has the new iPhone5-style connector, was a good clue.

I had both Apple and Microsoft technical support technicians look into my computer, and both swore that everything looked perfectly normal as far as the iTunes software and the Windows 8 OS was concerned. They were right! (By the way, although technical support is not cheap, these folks were very informative, helpful, and tenacious).

Bottom line is that if you have USB connection issues with your iPhone 4, here is another thing to try: firmly jiggle the connector to make sure it's in tight, then apply steady upward or downward pressure on your connection at the iPhone 4S. That just might do the trick.

Good luck!

TraderKK, still doesn't work for me.

I have windows 8 64 bit and iphone 4s 64 gb.

I come to the "usbaapl64" part and then i get error:

"The folder you specified doesn't contain a comptabile software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems. "

Help please

I'm having similar problem. Recently changed my apple ID and then when I synced iphone 4 I lost 1000 tunes which are greyed out on phone. When I tried to resync it it itunes won't detect the phone either wirelessly or using the USB. I've tried the following with no joy:

  • Reinstalling itunes about 5 times
  • Stopping and starting Apple Mobile Device numerous times
  • 2 USB cables
  • Continually signing in and out
  • Turning laptop on and off again

I have literally lost the will. Can anyone help?

After crawling internet Q&As and Forums after having the same problem, here is what I found.

Without any success from any of the online posts, my friend had bought around there IPHONE 5. I inserted his iphone in with his cable and it automatically picked it up and began installing the necessary drivers. Removing the friends iphone and inserting my iphone 4 in, I found that the problem was solved.

I am not sure if it was his usb cord or not, as mine was charging but not picking it up on the computer.

So try connect a later model iphone to your computer, then it will install the missing driver, which can then work with your iphone 4.

Hope that helps, and all the best.
