The blue box with the question mark indicates that (for some reason) the image cannot be found, or displayed. One of the main reasons, I think, is that the pages are badly written, or that the file name of the image is wrong. Could we have a URL so that others might check the pages you are having difficullties with?

You do not write which browser you are using: can we guess Safari? If so, are you blocking pop-up windows? If you are, turn this off (if you aren't, turn it on -- just to see).

I know what 'mom' means as I have it too.

I have just changed over to a MBP 17" from a PPC G4 and now in Safari, or Netscape come to that, I can no longer get QuickTime movies just a blue 'Q' witha "?" through it. I have QT Pro v7 all updated.

Judging from "mom's" question I guess he/she (I wish people would use proper names) has an Intel iMac so the problem 'could' be intel?Safari related although how I don't know.

Any ideas folks?

Cheers

Mike

Mike (that's a proper name), I think we might all get this from time to time -- I had a few of Apple's little images not load just after writing that last response -- but it depends (I guess) how often, which sites, and a number of other factors. My reason for this occurring earlier is because of a slow IP and a poor cache response, so that the browser may be unable to find all images in the time. But that is a one-off cause and there are several.

If you (or "Mom") could provide a URL, it might help initially to see if it is just you or all of us; if it is just Safari or all browsers; or if there are other factors involved.

The type of connection you use might also be a factor.

Mom, et al. . .
I agree the internet address would be very helpful so we could test it.

I do have a few suggestions for at least making sure a simple clean up is not the problem:

First: Do you have internet apps SpeedDownload, iGetter, PithHelmet, Acid Search, Safari Enhancer ? Or Norton or Virex? Sometimes non-apple internet apps need updating or uninstalling.

Also, if the problem is only in Safari, have you done all of the following?
(Do these one at a time, then Restart Safari)

1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu

2. Trash your Icons Folder:
HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)

3. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.

If you're still having problems:

4. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.

Hope this helps 🙂

Your URL uses Flash (.swf) so you'll need to install the free Flash Player and its plug-in to view. A page element from that URL:
http://www.myfonts.com/library/artwork/00323.swf
QuickTime Player (and its plug-in) can play some Flash files but not all.
You can change its plug-in settings and turn "off" Flash Media via the QuickTime sys prefs/Advanced and click the MIME Settings button. Remove the check mark for Flash Media (Miscellaneous) and restart your browser.
Install the Flash Player and it will display these instead of QuickTime.
The .swf example above can be opened by QuickTime. Just copy the URL, open the QT Player and File/Open URL and paste.
The example is a waste of Flash as it is only a static looping image.

Mike: If you migrated (I am just guessing here), was the plug-in the right one for the Intel chip?

Mom: When you first posted, I sugggested you provide a URL -- the address of a website (or two) -- that was giving you grief. A few other posters have also now asked for this. It is difficult to analyse a problem and find a solution with incomplete information.

As you may note, Mike did provide a URL for his similar problem and the cause was traced: he is on the way to solving this.

Which site (or sites) is giving you problems?

Mom (Emilie)

Both those sites work great here.
So bad programming isn't the problem.

Have you checked your Network settings?
Are they all OK?
Who is your ISP, by the way?

The fact that firefox doesn't work well either
tells us that Safari is not the problem.
I think it's a setting somewhere in your Network.
Or your ISP has messed up, and is not telling you.

Give us more to work on, OK, Mom?

Graham, (and Emilie?),

From what you said about the correct Flash Plug-in for the Intel Chip I found this over at Adobe:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=82216d24
It seems, if I have got it right, the Fash plug-in only works under Rosetta so you have to make Safari work under Rosetta for it to be installed and for it to work and also applies to Firefox?

I'm getting confused, are they saying then that although Safari runs universally it has to be hobbled to to run under Rosetta just so you can see the Flash parts on some sites? If so, it seems daft to me...

Cheers

Mike
