I've gotten around this problem temporarily, By taking a penny and gently rubbing it along the charger socket

    Hi,

I had the same problems and just solved it (iPhone 4S).

I took some alcohol and put 1 drip of it into the hole of the headphone plug of the iphone. Than I took a ear-cleaning stick (that has some soft tissue on top) and put that into the earphone plug and twisted it.

You must push it a bit to the bottom, because there appears to be some contact (which is dirty or whatever).

After a bit twisting with the earcleaning-stick, get it out and wait for a minute, to let the alcohol vaporate.

After that it should work again (or maybe a restart is needed). But if i remembered well, it worked instantly.

    (my problem was:

I got the ringtone sounds, but when going to for example to Youtube via Safari, there was no sound at all.

Sometimes there was a bit sound for a few seconds, but that lost it. Also in the home screen, I could not adjust volume, only a grey icon appeared without the volume bar)

It seems that the the new software (IOS 7.0.2 update) is not compatible with the hardware of a series of  iPhone 4S. I also tried everything posted on these pages, none of them worked! I even tested after "Erase All Content and Settings" w/o any application installed; didn't help!

I learnt that there no an esy way to go back to 6.1.3 or 6.1.2 versions. These post has 45671 Views. So there are lots of us out there. I have created a facebook page to ask someone from Apple to answer!

    We deserve an answer, right?

Try to clean it with alcohol with a toothbrush or an ear cleaner cotton!

Try and try again! If works

Mark my answer with like pls.

    Hi everybody,

I've been having this issue since Ios6.

This is a brief overview of what happened (for me), I tried EVERY suggestion found online, such as removing apps, checking logs, reset, hard reset, complete re-install, cleaning jack socket, cleaning charging socket etc...

NONE of the above worked for me, but i must say that when I contacted apple they said that at least one of the above SHOULD work (but it didn't).

Anyway... All in all when i finally decided to let it go, the sound came back UNEXPECTEDLY (for no reason).

Sounds unbelievable, I couldn't believe it either, but that's exactly what happened.

Still very disappointed that apple simple doesn't care, but I don't believe this will change any time soon.

The best advise i could give, is to contact apple online support (I was quiet impressed, they're very helpful), and if that doesn't help try to visit their store.

Titro, you've posted your contribution like about 7 times, thank you. But it hasn;t worked for most of us, and we've read it. Please stop posting the same thing again and again.

I have this problem immiediately after upgrading iPhone 4 from iOS 6.1.3 to iOS 7.0.2

None of the earlier soutions worked, including the scores of suggestions to clean the charger and jack plug sockets, and all the variations on long timeout reboot, erase and restore, etc etc.. I've cleaned the socket with contact cleaner, isopropylalcohol and brush and tip, jet blow, and nyet xippedy doo dah.

I;ve toggled settings, wifi and bluetooth, sound lock etc, and played with calendars.

Of course I have an iPhone 4 so my Home button is useless.

However if you use the assistive touch accessibility settings, a small icon can be seen black or ghosting on the screen:

    Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch>slide to ON

When it appears, one can move it wherever one likes on the screen.

Tapping it brings up an overlayed box on any screen.

    In the box, tap Device

This brings up options including Volume UP and Volume DOWN, also Voice Control.

(Neither of the Volume UP or DOWN options work for me since upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS 7.0.2)

    BUT

You could try instead tapping Voice Control from the overlayed box.

It floats a number of voice activation suggestions.

I ignored them, and eventually for no obvious reason it just dialled one of my Contacts.

(Unfortunately, no PHONE screen appeared, but the iPhone connected to the dialled contact).

Eventually I disconnected the call after frantic taps.

At that point, my volume miraculously reappeared.

However, it disappeared as soon as my phone started ringing for an incoming call and I answered it. Sound gone again.

Voice Control trick brings the sound back, but it's lost again as soon as I receive a call.

Cleearly the problem has SOMETHING to do with detecting whether the sound is or is not hijacked by an app or docking, and the problem is extremely irritatingly diverse in its effects within the device and operating system.

My phone is now effectively useless, just a glorified memory stick.

Apple has a Real Software Problem, Houston.

In the end, cleaning the dockconnector was succesful for me.

After cleaning it before I had another go at it with a toothbrush and a slightly wet piece of paper. I was really surprised that it worked!

So I would suggest being patient and again carefully clean the connector.

I have found a 100% fix or having no sound or spin slider on music etc... Just simply squeeze either side of your home button while on charge an your sound and slider on music will appear when you go on to it!

So not long after downloading iOS7, I went to a movie and silenced my iPhone 4 using the button on the side. Ever since then, I cannot turn my volume up or down for messages or incoming calls. It vibrates, but it's like it's stuck on silent. I can play music and videos fine. It's just on calls and messaging. My volume is up all the way in Sounds>Settings. Please help! Is this because of iOS7 or is something wrong with my phone? I've had other minor glitches since getting iOS7, but those have resolved. I figured this was part of it too. Please advise, thanks.

It is wired, but cleaning the bottom connector with a wet toothbrush fixed my problem. I still believe it was a software related problem, because it happened exactly after updating the iOS. I am having a hard time to relate these two. The only explanation I have is that the wet brush shorted temporarily some of the pins in the connector and somehow reconfigured the software ...

    Clean it witha brush.

    This is my explanation:

At my house, I connected to my apple wifi, ive started to use Airplay. when doing it, options were apple tv, airport express and dock connector... the software was assuming that the iphone was connected there... I thought, maybe with this sowftare update, it started to use a pin of the connector that didnt used before and maybe that part was dirty making a false message to the software... then I cleaned twice, reset it and sice two weeks ago, Ive neved had the problem again... try twice or three, reset and come back. regards
