just go into your messages app and start deleting by swiping,

Messages are where they alway have been - in the message app. Have no idea what you mean by "my messages are being saved"? They always are saved until deleted

To delete:

Messages > swipe right to left accross message > delete

delete by swiping, the messages that are taking up all of the space would be the messages that have picture attachments, delete those first and then recheck the size.

Unless you have a lot of photos and videos attatched to your messages, you would have to have >100,000 messages to take up 5.5 GB.

I also see under Settings -> General -> Usages that Messages are taking up a considerable amount of space. They are labeled as Messages (Saved). The issue with previsous comments in this thread is that there is an assumption that we have not already deleted the message using the iMessage app. With no messages visiable there and no more to delete, then we are expecting to see this space utilization go down.

Since this space does not reduce after deleting all messages, the question remaims...

"How do we free up space on the iPhone under iOS 7 where usage reports space for Messages, but we have already taken action to delete messages under the iMessages app?"

This is my exact question as well.

I deleted every single iMessage conversation yet the iMessage Usage data states I still have 1GB of Messages (saved). Short of reinstalling it as a new device how can one reclaim this space?

I checked that setting on my phone as well. It showed 55 MB saved in Usage. If you have deleted all the messages in the app itself try going into settings/ Messages and toggling it to off then back on. See if that changes anything. If not try the same thing but before toggling it back on, restart your phone. Maybe it will delete the data theat way.

Kindest of thanks for your reply. I have tried toggling it on/off, restarting phone and resetting settings - to no avail. I have seen quite a few posts on this forum and MacRumors of other users having the exact same issue.

I have the exact same problem. I also noted the same thing whith mail. After deleting everything l still have more then a Gb in both messeges and mail. dont know what else to do to free up that space

How do you know that the useage report is accurate? If you actually deleted all messages and email (including the trash and all folders) without changing the reported useage, there may be a bug in the iOS.

If you really need to free up space:

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Do not restore the backup.

Use iBackupBot.

I had 5G of "other" on IOS6 which turned to 5G of "messages (Saved)" in IOS7. After a day of research I downloaded iBackupBot (the free trial). I used it to edit my latest iphone backup then I restored my iphone from that backup. Now I have my 5G back! I hope this helps everybody!

Same issue here. iphone 5 w/ ios 7- which now itemizes your usage better than 6.

All messages and conversations are deleted.

All mail is deleted.

Settings -> General -> Usage

Messages (206 MB) "messages (saved)"

Mail (195 MB) "mail and attachments"

Mail and messages are still showing usage. How do I free this up? I have rebooted several times. This is not a lot of space so far but it's cumulative which is concerning--meaning the space adds up eventhough you delete

My son has 4G under his Messages (saved) but yet all messages are clear. My shows 546mg, which isn't the end of the world, but 4G is sucking up alot of room since he only has a 8G. I'm hoping to figure this out too.

Also, last night I reset his phone and then restored it hoping the messages would magically not come back. Did not happen. The 4G came back. So, I reset it again and created a new ID. Now he is mad at me because none of his old stuff is on the phone. If I find a solution I will reset use the restore and get it back to where it should be. I really hope there is an answer out there somewhere.
