podcasts gone after iTunes 11.1 update

Half of my iTunes Podcast library was deleted after the iTunes 11.1 update. I went into Time Machine and restored the files. I added them back to iTunes, but it deleted them again. I had to do another restore. Also, iTunes 11.1 no longer sorts my podcasts alphabetically, it's in a random order. Has anyone else had issues with the update to iTunes 11.1? If it's going to delete podcasts, it will become unusable to me.

I am having this same issue. Has anyone called Itunes support to resolve this issue? I have resorted to copying the files from my itunes library to a seperate folder until this huge bug is fixed. Apple has been letting me down lately. This bug, forcing me to use the podcast app, and the imessage issues which seem to have been resolved. I like ios7, but they have created a couple major bugs.

To the community:

Anyone know where to download the previous version (iTunes 11)? Can't find it through Apple.com and would prefer a safe, first-party download site.

To Apple:

I want you guys to realize the impact of this. I was planning on buying my father for his birthday/christmas an iPod Touch and Apple TV, because the best selling point of Apple products is how they work so well and so well together. Syncing podcasts was going to be the main reason for my purchase. But now, this happened. And now, instead, I will be looking at the (bigger, cheaper) Kindle Fire and the (cheaper) Roku for my father's gifts.

That's a minimum $304 loss to Apple in sales from me.

This "update" is a major hit to your creditability as a brand, even to long-time, loyal customers like me. Data destruction is a major no-no. I actually feel sorry for you guys because, after iTunes 11.1, you probably have a lot more people like me not upgrading to 11.1.1 and therefor not having the testing feedback to fix the problems of THAT version's fiasco.

Reading through these posts and I'm wondering if that is what happened when I submitted this question:

What happened to video podcasts with Quicktime? Videos I had on my iPad have been removed and I can't view them in iTunes. These are classes I love. How can I get them back? Currently on iTunes 11.1.1. I thought it related to Quicktime because when I searched for the missing podcasts on iTunes on my Mac they were greyed out and when I tried to re-download I got a message that Quicktime content was not playable in this version of iTunes. Will following the advise above fix it? Thanks!

Thanks, I was thinking of that. But I am concerned about installing Mavericks, given the bad reviews I've read so far. Some people have said that their music sounded terrible on it and there may be other problems as well. Is there another version of QuickTime for OS X I can use that would work? I thought I had QuickTime, not sure where it went. It seems like all my music and other podcasts, movies, TV shows are still in my iTunes and on my devices.

Really appreciate your help.

I downloaded and installed QuickTime Player 7 and then went into iTunes to try to re-download the video podcasts that were removed. I tried it from my iTunes and then from opening QuickTime into iTunes. I can see all of the video podcasts, but when I click on them to download, I still get this message: "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes." So now I have QuickTime back and it still doesn't work. This is so frustrating. These are video podcasts that I've used for years and now for no understandable reason, I can't access them anymore. Does Apple see these discussions? As others have said, I've always defended Apple because it just works - why this change? As Terrorsteel asks - would going back to iTunes 11.0 help? If so - how can I do that? Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Try this. Go to the Podcast folder (in your account, Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Podcast) and see if you can find your podcast files. Copy one or more to the desktop, then see if you can open with QT7 (for example, by right clicking the podcast and opening with QuickTime Player 7. This bypasses iTunes altogether.

Thanks relh. I can try this, but I really wan to view my video podcasts on myiPad (I take them out of town with me). I assume that if I copy or move them to my desktop, if I can get them to work with QT7 on my MacBook, they would not be viewable on my iPad. Is that correct? Does anyone think this is something that the Genius' can resolve?

Good follow-up question CPH. If you can open a podcast with QT7 on your MacBook, you might be able to convert to a usable form using Export (e.g., one of the options is Movie to iPhone). I've never tired this specific conversion but other conversions have worked for me. But it might be very slow.

Yes, this is just insanelly ridiculous!

I noticed that iTunes was running VERY slow for the last week or so, and then suddenly realized that 200GB of my Library had dissapeared!!!! Not just dead links in the iTunes library, they had been deleted from the drive too!

The files were on a dual redundancy NAS and no errors and no other data missing, just the ones used by iTunes. Luckily I have a recent backup and am restoring the whole direcrtory, but not sure if the same will just happen again.....

First thing I will do is disable the "sync podcast options" since that appears to be the main culprit here, but its unbelievable and unacceptable that Apple can release such a destructive version of its software! I've been in IT for more than 30 years and NEVER heard of software this bad! No messages, no errors, no indication that its even deleting the files, or why its doing so!!!

Do Apple not even bother to test their software before release now?!! It's obvious that its a big and destructive bug, since so many people have been effected, why can't you pick this up in testing BEFORE release, and not release software that just thinks it can delete our files without even telling us!

This new sych option seems a ridiculous setting too! It doesn't indicate exactly what settings on what devices it is syncing, and in particular doesn't say how it handles setting conlicts either!!!

I personally know that my iTunes auto delete settings were not at fault, and in about 70% of the podcasts, the actual subscription was deleted too! not just the files!

we idiots have given itTunes full access to out precious music and video libraries, trusting that Apple will not accidentally delte them. Well, I don't know about anybody else, but I certainly have had my eyes fully opened, and will keep a VERY CLOSE eye on this old and unstable app in the future!

I've lost all my podcasts as well. I tried all the steps listed in this discussion, including locking the barn door of unchecking Sync podcast subscriptions, settings and stations, replacing iTunes Library file etc. to no avail.

Seven years of Car Talk podcasts... gone. Ditto This American Life. Ditto many others not available any more.

My bad for not having a backup, but the iTunes files was on an external hard drive due to the size. I never anticipated Apple would somehow delete all those files from this hard drive.

I've tried a data recovery program, without much success.

So, I'm SOL, I suppose?
