Thanks for all of your replies. It helped me solve the problem. I too received the unknown error 29 code after replacing the battery of my iPhone 4s. I did so in order to give it my mother in law (her first smart phone). My advice to anyone else would be to update your iOS version with the old battery prior to replacement. I had the battery replaced at a store, took it home to charge, then needed to update to 9.3.5 for apps to work, but the phone got stuck, and bricked during the update. I brought it back to the store and had them remove, then reinstall the new battery. No dice. So, I brought it home, put the old battery back in myself, and voila - it updated to 9.3.5. Now, I swapped back the new battery and finally all is well. The YouTube vids helped

I would not have tried all that without this thread, so thank you. My iPhone 4s has new life.

Apple is not here, we are users like you. See this support document for information on error messages http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694. The one you refer to has to do with security software usually.

Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40

These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Use the steps to troubleshoot security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See the steps under the heading "Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store." If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

I read all of that on Apples website and I tried disabling my Firewall and security software but that didn't fix the problem. I also installed iTunes on a different PC but had the same problem (same home computer network). I don't know how to check the host files but I can access the iTunes Store from my iPad while on this network (or Wi-Fi connection). I am going to go camp out at the Verizon store tomorrow and see if they can help me.
