Q: Airport Express over power line any tips/tricks to get it to work?

I am trying to get a wireless network connection to work in my basement. It is too far and/or too many walls to pick up the wireless network in the rest of my house.

I recently purchased a Netcomm 500mbps powerline adapter as running ethernet to the basement was going to be too difficult.

The good news is the powerline seems to work fine as the airport express has a green light and i can see it and configure it from my IMac upstairs ok.

The not so good news is when I try to connect to it with my IPAD in the basement it fails to connect.

I had read a previous post from Bob Timmons recommending the config for the airport express should be set to Create a network which is what i have done.

I have used the same network name and password as the wirless network upstairs.

My configuration is 1 Airport Extreme Base Station broadcasting to 2 Airport Express's in my Kitchen and lounge which are set to join and extend respectively.

the 3rd aiprort express is the one in the basement which is going via the netcomm powerline (this is the only one using the powerline).

The airport expressmodel is A1264.

Any ideas Bob or anyone?

I assume that you have 2 powerline adapters.....one near the "main" router and the other near the AirPort Express.

 

The Express needs to be setup to

 

"Create a wireless network"

Use the exact same wireless network name as your main router

Use the exact same wireless security setting as your main router

Same wireless password as the main router

Be configured in Bridge Mode

    Hi Bob,

     

    Thank you in advance for your help. I also have a powerline/airport express connectivity question.

     

    I have a cable modem connecting to a netgear router (R6300 model) connecting to a powrline (WD Livewire)  which is plugged into the wall downstairs. The netgear router has security WPA2-PSK [AES]. Upstairs I have a second WD Livewire which I hope to connect  to an Airport Express. Unfortunately I haven't managed to get my Airport Express to work (it is flashing amber). The upstairs WD LIvewire is working properly.

     

    I have tried to match the wireless network name, security settings, and wireless password as the main netgear router but it still isn't working.

    The AirPort Utility gives WPA2 Personal as an option for wireless security. Is this the same as WPA-PSK [AES]? Would you mind taking me through the steps in the Airport Utility what I need to do.

    Setup instructions are shown a post or two above.

     

    If you need more specific help, we need to know what version of AirPort Utility you are using. Open AirPort Utility on your computer, click the AirPort Utility menu in the upper left corner of the screen, click About AirPort Utility and post back with the version number that you see there.

    I have a question concerning using a powerline and Airport Express.... I think it fits in with this discussion. If not, well, I have a new post already posted about boosting my wifi upstairs. But in reading this my question is: if I purchase a powerline and plug it into my ASUS router, then 'all' I would need to do is to plug in a second powerline upstairs and then can I plug in an Airport Express to boost my wifi upstairs? Can I 'get crazy' and purchase yet another powerline and an Airport Express and use it to boost the wifi so that my iTunes movies stream better to the Apple TV??? Thanks for any help with this, Judy
