ipad 2 update to ios7, connect to imac osx 10.5.8 itunes 10.6.3

what I have:

ipad 2 update to ios7, connect to imac osx 10.5.8 (will not run later versions) itunes 10.6.3

what doesn't work:

when I connect my ipad to itunes I get this message: can not connect, requires itunes 11.1

what to do? At least I backed everything up first!
