I don't know if others have the same issue, but my MBA freezed 2 times since I updated to 10.8.5, that's why I'm wondering if it's related ... I did not dig in log files to search for the root cause.

also Freeze for me. Even having reinstalled the combo version. I even lost my key chain. It is getting really annoying.

I just started having this problem on my iMac after the 10.8.5 update. I will try the combo update and report back.
It took almost three hours to run the combo update as suggested by dominic23. The system crashed when I tried to open the .dmg file, rebooted, opened the .dmg, ran the package and it crashed two hours into the install. I re-rebooted in 'safe mode' (reboot, hold shift key down after chime) and ran the combo update again.
Success, I think. The system seems snapier than it did after the original update to 10.8.5.
If I have further problems I will post them.

Another day with a bug for me. My laptop was closed and connected to my Thunderbolt screen. After having disconnected it and put it in my bag, I realized 1 hour later that it was still running, with a really high temperature and impossible to log in for a clean shutdown (no display at all)
Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
I understand the frustration.
Do the resets mentioned above.
Keep the computer on a flat surface at least for 5 hours.
Then restart.

Reply to myself to say it seems to have done the trick. Computer is still fine two days later so the advise of re-applying the combo update worked.
reset of PRAM and SMC solved the issue (2 days after). It's weird that we still have to reset them ...

sam overhere. macbook pro 2.2 Ghz update to 10.8.5 and freezes.
all done like recovery etc..nothing. Do they push you to get Maverick like this???

So finally it didn't resolve the issue
I found it!
after douzens of reboots and often failiers - even safe boots! I cleaned the PRam
hold down command alt P and R after the chimms on the boot up and make it three times booting up holding down the keys.
then after the third chimms you press SHIFT. it boots up in safe mode.
use your WIFI (ethernet hangs the mac) and download OnyX from titanium. make shure you pick the correct version for your OSX!

install and run the app.
it fixed all the mess of update 10.8.5.

Why Onyx ??? What did you do with that ?? I tried another time to reset the Smc ...
