They're okay for Instagram purposes (ugh - that goes back to your idea that the phone is designed twoards emerging markets).

iOS 7 is inconsistent with itself. Look at the icons. The "light source" for the Mail icon is at the bottom, but it's at the top for the camera icon. The calculator icon is totally flat.

The icon for a camera looks like an actual camera and the icon for the newstand looks like a crudely drawn brochure rack. The icon that looks like the NBC peacock sitting on a mirror is for photos, and the soap-bubble icon is somehow supposed to remind you of games. Maybe the bubbles are supposed to remind you of balloons, and balloons are supposed to remind you of birthday parties, and birthday parties are supposed to remind you of games. So some icons look like things they represent, and others are completely abstract or tangential.

There's no consistency in whether the icons are flat, lit from below, or lit from above; whether they are abstract symbols or are a naive representation of what they stand for. Obviously there were no design guidelines.

Kenneth - did you see the design someone posted a link to on the previous page? The icons were gorgeous - simple, iconic, instantly recognizable.

I DIDN'T notice the variations of lighting source, but I DID feel a constant disorientation from iOS7 - maybe it was in part all the variations you mention? Food for thought...!

OS 7 is inconsistent with itself. Look at the icons.

The icons in iOS 1-6 are no more "consistent", and neither are the Androgyny icons or those of any computer OS. Add in the "inconsistency" of 3rd party app icons on the home screen, the effect of a "consistent" set of iOS icons gets washed out.

Only a very small percentage of iPhone users have any awareness of icon consistency and and few of those who do find that to be of any real significance.

Those icons violate the "flat" design if iOS 7, and have no intrisic appeal to me.

There used to be printed design guides for Windows and Mac software. They both said that icons should be drawn as if the light source was from the upper left. People are not consciously aware of things like that, but the guidelines have a definite I-can't-put-my-finger-on-it effect, making the interface look polished or haphazrd.

It's worth bearing in mind that iOS 7 was designed by someone who had the cajones to avow "The iPhone 5C is beautifully, unapologetically PLAAASTIC."

If that line had appearred in a Will Farrell movie, it would have brought the house down.

You can fix ignorant, but you can't fix stupid.

Funny how some posters who initially did not like iOS 7 will admit later that they're starting to warm to it. Then there are the posters who feel the need to validate their own opinions by ridiculing everything.

I haven't seen those guidelines, but I can't see that they have been ever followed (for many years, at least).  Again, I see no more consistency in iOS 1-6, any other mobile OS, Windoze or OS X.

This is an utterly trivial matter at most.  Grasping at straws.  If the icon design and colors compel you to get rid of iOS 7, you have priorities (or hidden agendas) that don't relate to the vast, vast majority of iPhone users.

I agree completely. The update worked fine here. I could camplain about a lot of things, but then I'd look like a whiner. I'll pass.
