deleting podcasts in iTunes 11.1

I upgraded to iTunes 11.1 this morning and many of the podcasts that I have watched and deleted or decided not to watch and deleted came roaring bac to my screen and I can't delete then.

The delete button no longer works for one item or for a highlighted group of items.

I subscribe to the Slate gabfest for example and every podcast back to the first of this year suddenly reappeared.

It threw me off at first too.

The ones that you cant delete, do they have a little cloud icon next to them?

If so, they are not on the comptuer, they are available to download from the cloud.

the ones without the cloud icon I can delete but they still show just in case I want to download them again.

The question then becomes is there any way in which we can 'hide' those in the cloud? You can hide music you have purchased and is stored in the Cloud but why do you have to see 'dead' Podcasts?! When I delete I want to do exactly that; DELETE! I do not wish to see them again especially when I now have to scroll through 3 years worth of Podcasts to get to the bottom of my subscription to see the one I want to listen to.

Can you "hide" those in the cloud? Apparently, no. The List view for podcasts is totally broken - we can only hope that Apple will fix that in a future update, but given how long it seems to take them to fixing anything podcast-related, I wouldn't hold my breath.

For now I'd recommend forgetting about the List view - go over to the My Podcasts or My Stations panes when you're in iTunes's Podcasts section. They're not as good as what the List view was 48 hours ago, but they're a lot better than it is now.

Note that I'm not really sure what vocabulary to use for this: the ones in List, with the cloud icon, aren't on your computer, so I guess you're not exactly deleting them - you're just removing them from the list. Still quite annoying though!

Yes, episodes you haven't downloaded are in the list but are not occupying any space on your computer. Previously it was possible to delete non-downloaded episodes from the list, but this has been removed. However in 'My podcasts' view you have an 'old episodes' button to show un-downloaded ones. When you click 'Done' these disappear again, but you can choose to show selected episodes in the main view by clicking on the grey circle at right of the title.

THis is really a stupid idea. Each morning I download several podcasts and view them and then delete them. The podcasts I downloaded after the new release are "in the Clouds" so the result is that every podcast that I listed to until Apple fixes this will be filling up the list. I do not like the other views.

Will my cloud ever get full. So fasr I have opted to not use the cloud

Thanks. The My Podcasts view is really helpful. You can choose which individual items to display regardless of their status (in the cloud, downloaded, new, already viewed). I like the list view better, but until they get it fixed, My Podcasts is a good choice for me. I was afraid to click the "old episodes" button for fear I would be downloading all the old episodes, but it just shows what it available and allows you to choose which ones to display. Thanks for the info.

How, why, by what means, and by what authorization does Apple/iTunes decide what I want stored in their cloud [servers]??

What do you mean? Podcasts are stored on the originator's server from which you download them. Songs and films you purchase are (obviously) stored on Apple's server from which you download them. In both cases they are still on the server and you are able to re-download them to your other devices if you wish. iTunes Match allows you to upload material you didn't purchase, but it's your choice.

The complaint in this thread is that older podcasts still show in the list and can't be removed from it - it's only a list: if you haven't downloaded them onto your Mac they aren't taking up more than a few bytes of space, it's just that with a long list it's inconvenient to view.

I also use the podcast list view to manage my podcasts. Some I like to keep, some I am still cathing up on and like to manually download older episodes to listen to. Well the new list view makes this extremely difficult because I cannot distinguish between episodes I have already listened to and those that I have not downloaded yet. Before I used to just delete the ones I had already listened to and all that was left in my list were the episodes I had not yet seen.

I would also like to know why iTunes 11.1 decided to unsubscribe me from all of my podcasts, except for the apple ones?
