Problem with iOS 7 and smtp Gmail

Hi everyone,

I chose in the past for a Gmail account because it supported push mails on the iPhone through Exchange.

When Google stopped the push mails through Exchange, I found a work around to keep using my gmail address on my iPhone :

  • I created an iCloud email address, to have push mails
  • I set a rule in my Gmail that automatically forwarded all incoming mails to my iCloud email address
  • I changed the outgoing server of my iCloud address, using smtp.gmail.com so that all outgoing mails of my iCould account was using my Gmail address

It was a bit complicated to set up, but at the end it worked fine and it was transparent for my contacts: they were sending en receiving mails from my Gmail address.

It all worked until... iOS 7. With iOS 6.1.4, it was OK, but since the latest upgrade to iOS 7 my outgoing mails are coming from my iCould and not my Gmail account anymore. The iCloud SMTP server is set as "inactive" and the smtp.gmail.com is set as "active", however emails are sent from my iCloud address...

I don't get it. My iPad is still in 6.1.3 with the same settings as my iPhone 5 in iOS 7: my iPad reacts as it should be, my iPhone doesn't.

Is it an identified bug in iOS 7, is it a problem at Gmail's side?

Thanks for your feedback,

Chris

Hey, I found a workaround to my issue, which may help others set up email as you would want: Simply set up the email account using the generic maiil account setup where you manually enter server and credentials. This has seemed to "fix" my problem and may "fix" yours as well. Of course, what we really need is the way things worked pre-iOS 7 for these email setups to just work again. It feels like this being broken is a bug and not intentional.

Ok, so I have a work around for this that I have tested on my iPad 2 and iPhone 5 (both running ios7)..

So what you'll have to do is disable the mail from the iCloud options.

Go to the Mail App or (Add Account)

You'll have to choose Other

Name (Your choice)

Email (Your @me or @icloud email)

Password (Apple id Password)

(Make sure it's IMAP)

Incoming Mail Server

Host Name (p02-imap.mail.me.com)

User Name (@me or @icloud email)

Password (Apple id Password)

Outgoing Mail Server (Your choice... Mine being gmail)

Host Name (smtp.gmail.com ....Gmail..in my case)

Username (Gmail... in my case)

Password (Gmail pw in my case 😉)

Finally you save... Voila...

P.S. Push still works.. Really important to me. I have tested various times with the iPad and iPhone.

Like deh2k, this workaround doesn't seem to be working for me. Emails are still showing as being sent from @icloud.com as opposed to my @gmail.com address as was the case prior to the iOS7 update. I've tried with both the p02-imap and imap incoming servers. Outgoing server is smtp.gmail.com.

Any other ideas? Any acknowledgement from ape yet about this being a bug and when we can expect it to be fixed?

Thanks

I have the similar problem with using 3G and wifi with the different outgoing mail servers with IMAP

that it does not seem to search for a connection that will work and always stuck with one.

So, tried turning OFF the primary outgoing server and added it into the OTHER SMTP SERVER list

and turned it on there and it works ! It will now search for the one that will work in the list.

I wonder if there is some bug that prevented it from searching through the SMTP servers with the

primary one is set to ON ??
