Problem with iOS 7 and smtp Gmail

Hi everyone,

I chose in the past for a Gmail account because it supported push mails on the iPhone through Exchange.

When Google stopped the push mails through Exchange, I found a work around to keep using my gmail address on my iPhone :

  • I created an iCloud email address, to have push mails
  • I set a rule in my Gmail that automatically forwarded all incoming mails to my iCloud email address
  • I changed the outgoing server of my iCloud address, using smtp.gmail.com so that all outgoing mails of my iCould account was using my Gmail address

It was a bit complicated to set up, but at the end it worked fine and it was transparent for my contacts: they were sending en receiving mails from my Gmail address.

It all worked until... iOS 7. With iOS 6.1.4, it was OK, but since the latest upgrade to iOS 7 my outgoing mails are coming from my iCould and not my Gmail account anymore. The iCloud SMTP server is set as "inactive" and the smtp.gmail.com is set as "active", however emails are sent from my iCloud address...

I don't get it. My iPad is still in 6.1.3 with the same settings as my iPhone 5 in iOS 7: my iPad reacts as it should be, my iPhone doesn't.

Is it an identified bug in iOS 7, is it a problem at Gmail's side?

Thanks for your feedback,

Chris

Apple Iphone IOS 7 will not connect on port 465, period.

I downloaded a telnet app and tried to telnet to smtp.gmail.com on port 465.

No good.

I connects fine to smtp.gmail.com on port 25.

I can telnet to smtp.gmail.com on port 465 on my desktop.

All the failed email setups, attempted work arounds, setting adjustments, and heartache are for nothing. The phone can't connect on ports 993, 995, and 464. IOS 7 is a complete failure and you can't downgrade. It's worse than Vista.

It's unimaginable Apple would release a system as flawed as this. Telnet exposes IOS 7 SSOL email is broken!!!!!

Wake up Apple!!!

I found a workaround that permits haver the sent items send by smtp.gmail.com but still beeing save on icloud.

Activaste icloud mail. In ios7 activating secondary smtp dont work.

Creste a manual imap account With icloud on imap server and gmail on smtp. Put that Account as primary in settings. Desable push on this Account (put manual because the push already William work in the icloud mail account.

Activate the notifications on the iCloud account. Disable it on manual IMAP iCloud account.

The only thing we need to change when sending mail is when we reply to a mail on the real iCloud account. We must choose the from of the manual IMAP account(the one that have SMTP Gmail on it)

iOS 7.0.2 worked to correct this problem with syncing Exchange accounts on my iPhone 4S. I did the following:

  1. Delete the Exchange account from the iPhone by going to Settings, and then tap 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars' and then tap the account to go into the detail and then swipe down to the delete button and tap it.
  2. Download and install iOS update 7.0.2.
  3. Add the Exchange account by going back in to Settings, and then tap 'Add account'. Follow the prompts on the screen. For Google Apps, use server 'm.google.com', without the single quotes.

These were the exact steps I followed in this exact order. The iOS update was not working for me when it was initially released but finally got it downloaded and installed on my iPhone 4S. I am fully functional now and calendar syncs perfectly as well.

***end***

In case it helps anyone else, I attempted many of the solutions provided here with no luck (iCloud hybrid, etc). Here is what finally worked:

My problem: after upgrade to IOS 7 and 7.0.2, my gmail account in the mail app would not SEND messages, and ONLY when connected to the wifi AT MY OFFICE. I could send from the gmail app, and I could send gmail from the Mail app from my home wifi and Verizon LTE.

Deleting and re-adding the gmail account by selecting "Google" as the account type did not work, instead,

My solution:

1. Add account

2. Select "Other"

3. Put in gmail login information

4. Incoming server = imap.gmail.com

5. Outgoing server = smtp.gmail.com

The outgoing port defaulted to 587.

I was immediatly able to send and receive over my office wifi without any trouble.

Took me about an hour to resolve this after reading through this thread.

My iPhone 5S is now receiving PUSH emails from my GMAIL account and sending them via GMAIL also.

Thanks for the help guys; awesome!

To let you know, I have forwarded my googlemail email to my iCloud email (GMAIL marks the emails as read as soon as it forwards).

Set up my iCloud email account as an "Other" on the iPhone and changed the smtp to the GMAIL details. I was only able to get the email to send through GMAIL by unauthorising the iCloud SMTP and then by changing a small detail on the settings so the phone is UNABLE to use this server.

Thanks,

Jono!
