my macbook pro 15 inch 2.2 does not start up anymore after update, even after shift V.

after installing the update the machine rebooted. But only the apple logo en circle appeared. and then....stuck.

a hard shut down and reboot with Shift hold down until the bar did get it in safe mode (or was it the command V) but it freezes there....

Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.

First run Disk Utility > Repair Disk, if you get errors run until no errors reported, then try again.

Hi macjack,

The revovery does find mistakes and repairs them. Ran several times to be shure all are gone. But after restart the mac still freezes. Sometimes on the apple logo, sometimes on the desktop with arrow cursor or a bit further with the color wheel... All this because i did an update of the osx and with the restart it hang. Grgrgrgr

Tnx for your input

Now, that the disk errors maybe corrected, you might try starting in Safe Mode again and see if the problem still occurs?

Restart holding the "shift" key.

(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)

Be sure to make a backup as soon as possible. The install or disk may be unreliable again.

EDIT: It's not the install that did it. The system was already corrupted, which is why you had issues with the install.

It would have failed pretty soon anyway. The update just pushed it along.

You might try this:

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Then download and install: OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo).

And there he goes again. Disk errors are checked. But after installing osx 10.8.5 again it always finds the same error.. A number that should be 80 but is 0. And files that are named wrongly. It autocorrects it all but themachine still freezes and not always at the same moment. Sometimes on the logo, sometimes on the colorwheel on the desktop. Disk has 14 gb free.

In recovery mode it runs fine.

I found it!

after douzens of reboots and often failiers - even safe boots! I cleaned the PRam

hold down command alt P and R after the chimms on the boot up and make it three times booting up holding down the keys.

then after the third chimms you press SHIFT. it boots up in safe mode.

use your WIFI (ethernet hangs the mac) and download OnyX from titanium. make shure you pick the correct version for your OSX!

install and run the app.

it fixed all the mess of update 10.8.5.

free at last. -thanks aplle for making an update look like Microsoft.

my macbook pro 15 inch 2.2 does not start up anymore after update, even after shift V.
