Nov 19, 2013 4:21 PM in response to turingtest2by NeighborsDog,Thanks to turingtest2.
Restoring from a back-up library did the trick. Luckily I had one right before the update.
Follow that link. Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.
don't forget to uncheck the 'sync podcasts" option.

Mar 17, 2014 6:56 PM in response to Mattazumaby washingtonpondfrog,I'm running the latest iTunes on my iMac and the latest iOS on my iPhone 5s. Suddently, without warning or explanation, most of my podcasts in iTunes on my iMac are gone. It seems to be all the podcasts I had synced with my iPhone, but I'm uncertain. What a terrible bug. I went into iTunes preferences and turned off syncing. I'm in the mac ecosystem because I want to avoid this type of bad software coding. Get your act together, Apple!!!

Apr 1, 2014 4:03 AM in response to turingtest2by pratalife,tt2 - thanks, that's the hint I needed.
It seems what has happened in my case is this, either caused by an iTune 11.1.x update or another device I've signed into iTunes with:
- 16 podcasts that I am subscribed to via iTunes were deleted (but files remained in my media folder so I could add them back)
- 4 podcasts that I'd subscribed to via iTunes, subsequently unsubscribed from, but had old episodes hanging around were perversely left untouched
- 60+ podcasts that I've manually subscribed to over the years (not via iTunes store) were removed, and the files deleted from my iTunes media folder
Gee, thanks Apple. How can I trust you not to delete anything else from my system?

You're welcome.

Quite!
Don't forget to make, and periodically update, a backup of the whole library and your other important data.

Apr 9, 2014 11:28 AM in response to Mattazumaby n1010et,Just discovered too that I have lost almost all podcasts I had subscribed to, from about 1200 to now just SIXTEEN. No clue what happened or how to recover, if that's even possible.

Jun 7, 2014 12:39 AM in response to turingtest2by zv-470,Thanks turingtest2, I had the same problem, your solution worked! Except I also had to disconnect my Mac from the Internet. Because the backed up copy of ~/Music/iTunes/ re-enabled the sync option.
so...
- Quit iTunes.
- delete ~/Music/iTunes/
- replace ~/Music/iTunes/ from backup copy
- disconnect Mac from Internet
- run iTunes
- Edit > Preferences Store and uncheck Sync podcast subscriptions
- quit iTunes
- copy backed up podcasts back into media folder
- run iTunes... podcasts should now be restored.
I'm just thankful I made a backup of ~/Music/iTunes yesterday.
The crazy thing is... with that sync podcast option selected... if you accidentally remove a podcast using the podcast.app in iOS... it will delete that podcast from iTunes, all the files and play info gone! That is nuts.
