Q: iPhone 5 camera not working after ios 7 update

The front camera works initially, but the rear camera shows a blurry image which then freezes the app.  Several hard resets have had no effect.

iPhone 5, iOS 7

    Hardenm.. I got the same/exactly answer from an apple advisor in stamford,ct.but the worst part was even if you pay 270 and receive a new phone, you can not add an apple care  x 99 dollars,( so to avoid a new issued) yuppp so if you do another upgrade you could lost 270 more bucks.. I was ****** and  I ended up returning an ipad air that i brought 2 weeks ago.. i

    Just had this start today, I tried resetting and all other mentioned fixes. I'm using a iphone 5 64gb model. Also my phone has started over heating and draining the battery as well as rattling noise coming from the back.

    Wish me luck at the apple store, I will keep you all updated if an outcome is found.

    Practically ready to switch to Android. iPhone 5 bought in April and still under guarantee but alas living in a country where Apple guarantees are not honoured. Worked like a charm until update to iOS7. Then cameras started being frozen on black or past focus, intermittently 7.02 fixed this, initially, somewhat, then boom. Then 7.03 fixed this mostly, for some time, then boom. And the last nail in the coffin was 7.04. I think I can see this Nokia-like pattern at Apple since Lion removed the pinch to zoom feature in the finder, which was as stupid as it was evil. The iPhone 5's wifi radio is also very weak, not seeing many wifi networks that an old Nokia of mine actually connects to. My iPad or my iPhone often don't even see my network of five 802.11n Airport Express routers, even when just in front of the routers, or often the routers stop seeing each other when my old 802.11g Airport Express Routers did reliably. My Apple TV drops the connection with my iPad or Macbook Air too often for comfort (and in every case, the Apple TV is just in front of them). And iOS7 introduced this useless white theme, removing contrast and readibity in the process. Apple looks bored. I will soon too.

    Hey to all,i have also encountered the same problem with my iPhone 5 and immediately found this post and decided to take the necessary precautions in getting in touch with Apple. I made a request for Apple to contact me ( Very ponctual and was pleased to see they respected the time they said they would contact me), I was asked a series of simple questions (i;e have you dropped your iPhone? , or has it been in contact with any liquid?) and a few details concerning the referance number of my iPhone etc and was then quickly told without any hesitation that my iphone would be replaced in 48 hours... I am guessing that the replacement would depend on what type on garantee you have, i was lucky because i only had 5 days left so got it just in time, otherwise i am sure that i would of had to pay either for the repaires or the replacement iPhone. So if you encounter this problem check ya warranty and dont try to fix it... IT WON'T WORK. either get in touch with Apple or go to an Official Apple Store.

    Within recpetion of my new iPhone 5 my warranty is prolonged to an extra 3 months so fingers crossed it doasnt screw up after that time.

    Hope this helps any of the poor unfortunate people that encounter this problem..

    Just a follow up on my instance. I had the same issue as everyone else on here and my iphone 5 was out of warrenty and I had no insurance. I called apple and asked to speak directly with a senior advisor. He was very friendly and I told him everything that had happened. He put me on hold a few times for about 10-15 minutes and eventually he reluctantly told me he would be able to send me a new iphone 5. He made it clear that this would only be a one time thing and they could not do this for me again. They sent me a box which arrived the next day, I packed up my phone and mailed it out, two days later my new iphone 5 was up and running at zero cost to me. I called my phone company to get it activated and also purchased insurance so I am now covered. Long story short try calling apple and speaking with a senior advisor. If you're really nice to them they might be able to help you out.

    Update: Apple engineering has requested me the device console log on my bugreport #15496075 on bugreport.apple.com.

    Maybe this is a sign that they are looking into it? Let's all hope so.

    Looking at the generated log of my iPad 2, while the front camera got frozen, these two lines are interesting:

    Dec 18 02:34:57 iPad-2 kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleH4CamIn::setPowerStateGated: 0

    Dec 18 02:34:57 iPad-2 kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleH4CamIn::power_off_hardware

    Dec 18 02:35:00 iPad-2 locationd[52] <Notice>: Location icon should now be in state 'Inactive'

    "setPowerStateGated: 0" means that software is telling hardware to power off and "power_off_hardware" probably means that it succeeded and camera is off. Maybe that means nothing because we are toggling from one camera to another, so maybe the off camera is the one that actually works.

    But maybe not: maybe software is telling hardware to shut down... I really do not know.

    BINGO! I think that is it... the proof that it is a SOFTWARE ISSUE.

    Just ran the console on my iPhone 4S with iOS 7. When toggling between front and rear camera, the command "setPowerStateGated: 0" is never logged. That means that camera app does not turn off any camera while toggling between them. So, camera app (SOFTWARE) is turning off the camera (HARDWARE) when toggle button is clicked.

    Why? Would love to know.

    BTW, if you would like to see if this also happens with your device, you'll need XCODE inslled on your MAC, run ORGANIZER, click on your device and then on CONSOLE.

    How can i get in touch to a senior advisor if im from the Philippines, i've been having this problem

    For almost 2 weeks now and its stressing me out bigtime, my phone was issued by a local telecom company and was asking them for a solution for my problem, they told me

    That it need to be replace but the problem

    Is that i dont have any proof of purchase since i bought from my friend and i cant contact him anymore, i just hope that they can also accomodate such problems to places that doesnt have any apple centers to simply by showing of your warranty they can actually replace it with a new one, i don't understand how the international warranty of apple works, since i also brought my unit to a local certified mac store, and they told me that they can't entertain my problem since it was released by a different company. Please help me out to clarify some things with this kind of issues?

    Push the switch on/off button on top and the home button at the same time until the iPhone switch off.

    The iphone will re-start (no loss of any data) and wups my rear camera was wotking again.....for now :-)

    i know most of you have already figured this out but it still nice to have it confirmed.  I took my phone in to the Leeds (UK) store today and they said it was a known hardware issue and they are unable to replace the camera like they can in previous models so they did a straight swap for a new phone.  I updated to ios7 whilst in store to check the camera and it worked perfectly.  I know this doesn't help you guys out of warranty but at least if they are now acknowledging it is a hardware issue there must be something you can do along the lines of the new os rendering the phone camera unusable and as one of the main features this should be resolved by them?

    good luck

    Jx
