How do I remove icons from Safari welcome page in iOS 7?

I have just up-graded to iOS7 and opened my Safari browser. There are four icons on the welcome screen and four links on a favourites bar. The links are to Apple, Disney, Yahoo and ESPN UK. I did not choose these links and I have no wish to use them. I have been able to hide the favourites bar but there is no obvious way to delete the icons. I have tried touching and holding them but they do not shake nor offer an 'x' for deletion like home screen icons so how do I clear away this unwanted advertising?

I have a screen shot but don't know how to upload it to this discussion board...?

Go to Bookmarks -> Favourites and then edit your Favourites.

Deleting a favourite will delete one of the icons on the Welcome page.

Adding one will add an icon to the Welcome page.

Did that help?

Hi John, glad you got sorted out.

And I agree with you about the new layout - very washed out, grey palette, loads of intrusive features I've had to find and then turn off. Haven't found anything I like about the new way yet but it's early days. Oh, and using the discussion boards on UK newspapers was always rotten on an iPad but now Safari shuts down at random when I try to post comments. Frustrating. Very.

I wish we could post images here as it would be helpful.

Try this: bookmarks> favourites> bottom corner of drop down list is a blue edit link, click on it, each listed favourite will get a red traffic sign next to it, highlight it, should change colour, then you can delete by sliding sideways.

Hope this helps!

Shouldn't Apple have explained this to us? Customer care? Hello?

I have an old iPad, so I'm not sure if this is a problem with legacy hardware, but I'm feeling very incompetent and frustrated right now. I've already tried everything discussed here before seeing this post. If I click the private button, nothing happens except the banner goes black at the top where you enter your search. If I go to the Favorites Menu, I see all the bookmarks but nothing to edit the list. I've tried holding an Icon until it expands, but there isn't an x button to delete it. I've tried swiping the icon off the screen, and this does nothing. I've gone into the settings and selected Safari, then favorites, but there is nothing there but a list of all kinds of favorite folders from who knows where or when. Several Favorite folders with Popular, Apple, News and Popular. I've noticed the favorites change depending on which of these folders I select. I'm guessing they are from syncing with Google Chrome and all my other browsers across all of the devices I use in the iCloud to sync.

I'm mystified how anyone gets from their final a ha I've figured it out to actually deleting anything. SO, I've gone to my iMac and deleted all the favorites I don't want in Safari. But that has yet to sync with the iPad and remove the confusing list of favorites in Safari Settings, Favorites.

So this problem is not solved for me.

Hi Piecrust,

I sympathise with you - you sound frustrated about the problem and I'd like to help. I put some screen shots on flickr, six photos arranged in order showing what to click etc. The set is called "Editing Safari" and it is open to the public so you can leave comments/questions and/or upload your own screen shots to get further help. Good luck with this!

Best wishes.
