AirDrop on iMac

I have 2 iMac's, both running Mountain Lion. Both are on the same WiFi network.

I've read several places that AirDrop will work between the two iMAC's as long as they are on the same WiFi local network. The 2 machines do not need to be in close proximity (within 2 feet).

I have not been able to get either iMAC to see the other one when I click on AirDrop in the Finder window.

Is there anything I need to set somewhere on either of my iMAC?

Thanks

Adrian

I'm sitting in front of one of my Mac's with my iPad about 8" away. I have both searching for another AirDrop device but neither sees the other.

The Finder on the Mac's opens a window with the Mac at the center and a message that it is searching for any other devices with AirDrop active. The icon to the left of "AirDrop" is slowly spinning.

Both Mac's are doing the same thing.

Thanks for the help.

You need to have Wifi activated and Airdrop highlighted in the sidebar and this type of window showing in Finder:

User uploaded file

Airdrop creates its own ad hoc network. If you do not see your User pic as in above sample, then your machine may not be supported or there is something else going on - a reinstall of the OS may fix the glitch. Also try to restart both machines.

Do you have Airdrop highlighted on both machines?

I've tried it with an iMac and an MBP with one in my study and the other in the livingroom (distance about 20 feet) and it worked (except for the fact that I had to run back and forth to click send, then click accept on the other machine, etc).

I really have no answer for this anomaly - as I said, try a restart on both. After that, try a reinstall of the OS using recovery.

babowa,

Thanks for the help. I now have AirDrop working great between my 2 Mac's. I just needed to get them closer together.

I believe I can now state that regardless of however many times I have read that the 2 computers have to be on the same WiFi local network, that is not accurate. I do not believe it has anything to do with it.

Now, am I to believe that AirDrop does not work between a Mac and an iPad? Does not make sence but that seems to be true. I think I'll post something over on the iPad thread.

Thanks again.

Adrian
