Just some friendly advice, If you get a replacement iphone, DO NOT UPGRADE to IOS 7.  I am now on my 3rd Iphone 4S.

The first one lasted a very short time and Apple replaced it, this had nothing to do with IOS7.

The replacement phone worked fine until the night I updated to IOS7.  WIFI went out and I went into the store for a fix.  They got my wifi working again but it was a temporary fix for about 2 days.

I went back to the Apple store and they replaced my replacement.  They even offered to update my new replacement phone to IOS7.  What an idiot I am, I said sure.  A few days with my replacement-replacement phone and now wifi is out again.  Nothing I do can fix it.

I now have to go back to the store to have my replacement-replacement replaced.  This will be my 4th iphone, I guess I am unlucky.  The people in the store were very nice but it was very hard to not get snippy with them when they repeated the same line to me for the 10th time, "a software update will not cause hardware problems."  At what point does a company acknowledge their problem?

DO NOT GET THE IOS7 UPDATE IF YOU GET A REPLACEMENT IPHONE 4S.

Lucky I got my iPhone 4S replaced in apple store.

And I'm in Australia so the warranty is 2 years by default.

If anyone have this issue and in Australia, please go to apple store to get a replacement if your phone is less than 2 years.

So I just get back from a trip to Boston where I used my 4s with no problem on various WIFI networks.  Today, WiFi stops working while I am at home.  Totally grayed out slide switch.  Take it to my local Apple store.  Told to come back at 6:30 when somone will help me.  Came back and the young (maybe 17 years old) "Genius" never mentions that this has been a known problem.  Doesn't even know how to get my phone out of its case.  I had to do it for him.  Takes the phone in the back of the store where he says he is going to look inside it.  Doubt that ever happened.  Came back and said sorry, the unit must have a short and wants to sell me a replacement for $200.  These are solid state devices.  Shorts don't suddenly appear in solid state construction.

I decide to go to Verizon and see what they will do for me.  On my way to Verizon I decide to pull over to the side of the road and google this problem.  That's when I found this thread.  But I also found a suggestion to turn off the phone, put it in a ziplock freezer bag and leave it in the freezer for 15 minutes.  Since my house was between me and the Verison store I decided to give it a try....It worked!!!  I took the phone out of the freezer, powered it up and it found the WiFi network on it's own, connected and now all is OK.  I will see if this stays OK or if the problem re-occurs and will let you know.  So far it seems an easy way to save $200.

Hambonepack is absolutely right, don't ever trying doing any more upgrades on your working replacement phone......there is just a big chance that you'll just have the same problem again if you do......nothing is wrong in the phone's hardware neither on anybody's router.....it is definitely just the software that is causing this issue we all are facing now......unless they come up with a software patch or would allow us to downgrade, my 4s will just be gathering dust in the cabinets.....no more Apple products for me & the family any more...:(

My wifi button finally gave up and grayed out a couple weeks ago.  I tried gverything I could think of except for the stupid idea of putting it in the freezer.  No luck.

So I decided that better a frozen phone than a brick and put it in for fifteen minutes (good thing I set a timer, because I had totally forgotten about it by 15 minutes).  Brought it out, let it warm up and turned it on, and........ Drumroll please!  For the last 12 hours, perfect consistent wifi.

Okay, so maybe not such a stupid idea after all.

Now the question remains: "For how long will this fix last?"  I don't know, I'll post again when it dies again, but for now I'll rejoice in a phone that actually works.

I really wish I hadn't upgraded to iOS 7 after receiving my replacement from AppleCare, but I wasn't sure how to restore my phone without upgrading. Now I am very concerned this wifi issue will raise its ugly head again. I've read countless posts about this issue, and I believe it is impossible that this is just a coincidence.

totally agree with you; I've tried most things and nothing works!

I've got an Apple phone with Apple software; I accept it's out of warranty but that's not the issue, there is something fundamentally wrong with the phone, or software, there's too many 4s users having the same problem, it must be a latent defect with the phone

Apple say it's a hardware issue and that I should contact O2 and quote my consumer rights; the phone isn't fit for purpose, in that it hasn't been able to run the updated OS software

O2 say it's software, they accept it's a hardware fault but they say caused by the software; and if the phone isn't fit for purpose then they'll just claim a new phone from the manufacturer - Apple

I feel I'm just being fobbed off by Apple; as stated it's an Apple phone, Apple software and there's lost of us with the same problem; doesn't take much to see who'e responsibility it is!!!

I bought my 4S as a second hand device in Hungary and it's out of warranty since aug of 2012. Yesterday i went to the Apple store in Manchester UK to ask them about the grayed out wifi and first they told me that the replacement would cost me 150 £ without warranty. After I showed them this discussion and they saw that it has almost 64k views they had a little talk with the store manager and told me that they will replace it FOR FREE.

So people when you go to the local Apple store dont be afraid and show this discussion to let them know how serious this is!

Sadly i got ****** up with my device when i bought it secondhand becouse it's got modified inside and it has missing components (screws, security something at the dock) and changed battery so they couldn't replace it. But they would if it would be original and with no warranty.

No suggestions or fixes but another iPhone4 user here who has gradually lost wifi since upgrading to ios7 a couple of weeks ago - button now greyed out when I can see or use the settings screen at all -- sometimes it closes down by itself or just freezes. Sometimes the wifi symbol briefly appears but as soon as I try to do anything using wifi it disappears.

Daughter still on ios6 and has full wifi capability as does the home ipad - so not the home router/signal. Find my iphone on the ipad cannot find my iphone! Very frustrating!

Watching thread with interest and have tried most of the simple suggestions but to no avail - phone currently in the freezer - have got to the stage that I will try anything!  It is my first iphone but will go back to htc or samsung if the software issue is not resolved.

Just taken it out of the freezer and switched it on - wifi working and loads of whatsapp messages just arrived! Will it go off when it warns up I wonder?

ConGrats Mate. Pleased for you.. Although I'm still without Wifi & unable to do photostream & amonst other things wifi is needed. Mines only an Iphone 4 so it'll not cost apple much to replace, But as you out of warranty which ***** because where forced to either find the money to upgrade to a newer iphone, Although my confiidance in Apple as now deminished to almost nothing & I'm bending towards a HTC.

So I'm left with nothing but a bloody useless Brick & Apple are Responsible for this.Everything worked fine with almost everybody before the IOS 7 Upgrade.. Beats me why there not Stepping up & taking Care of there Customers who have been with them for years..

    Believe it or not........

I had the greyed out wifi button and malfunctioning bluetooth on my daughters 4S and read this forum.

I tried changing the phones name and doing a network reset and a full reset. No change.....

I then out of desperation, not believing it could work, tried the freezer for 15 mknutes technique mentioned below.

    1. Switch off phone.

    2. Seal phone in a waterproof bag.

    3. Place phone (inside the bag) into the freezer.

    4. Leave for 15 minutes.

    5. Remove from freezer.

    6. Take phone out of the bag and switch on.

Hey presto....fully functioning wifi and bluetooth.

How long for remains to be seen.

    Same here in Greece..

..iphone 4s dead wi-fi after IOS 7.1 update, it's been 3 weeks now..

Took it for a check in the www.germanos.gr service store from where I bought it (we do not have official apple service here yet).

Just received a reply from the Germanos Store, the "official" service agency that suggests I should pay them 210 euros because the device was "decided" to be out of service.

So they are asking ME to pay for something that was THEIR fault.

    Guess not!

Plus COSMOTE (my provider) has just lost another loyal and good paying customer.

I signed in a 2 year contract with them in order to buy (at half the price ) the so-called Ferrari of the phones and now they have no idea.

    GREAT JOB SUCKERS!

    Nice way to loose customers!
