Return it and get your money back. It will not work with LTE networks outside of North America. The warranty is NOT valid outside of the US. AT&T must authorize unlocking it, which must be done via iTunes. They may do this as a matter of course for a device only purchase, but you'll still be left with a phone for which you won't have a warranty and which will not work on any LTE network outside of North America.

flyguy2929, is my statement factually incorrect, or is KiltedTim's answer to me incorrect?

Please clatify.

And Kilted Tim, as lame as it sounds, the person using this phone will not be interested in LTE speeds and warranty will not be a problem. In most other countries, people just want to use this phone because it is the latest model and nothing else. I know it sounds insane, but that is the case.

AT&T told me that they have no involvement with the phones that are purchased in full-price from Apple Store.

I just would like to hear from one person who physically bought such a phone and tried to use it on another carrier. So far, akuska seems to be the only one, so more information is appreciated.

Asuka. The statement is still incorrect and misleading. Totally agree with you on the fact that they must support carriers but they can do it without false statements about the product's specs. It is like a car manufacturers deliberately stating that the vehicle would not run on Canadian asphalt. Apple should rephrase it so that it is not factually false.

Thank you for your messages.

So I got a AT&T device-only phone from Apple Store this morning.

Apparently, there might be an Apple iTunes unlocking procedure associated with the device.

Does AT&T have to get involved at all or is it strictly an iTunes procedure? Any details on that procedure?

akuska, did you have to go through something like that or did you simply plug the new sim card in?

Just take out the SIM card from the tray, replace it with yours, and turn it on. You can activate either by connecting to a wi-fi network or plugging it into iTunes. There's no need to get AT&T involved unless you actually want to sign up for AT&T service using the SIM card in the phone.

Why do you need someone else's input? You already bought the phone. Try it with a foreign (non AT&T) SIM and see what happens. Preferably, before you leave the US so you can return it if it doesn't work.

Yes, it does seem insane to spend that much money on something that will not work fully and will not have any warranty coverage just so you can say you have the latest and greatest...

Kilted Tim is incorrect. The phone is NOT locked if you pay full price for it at the Apple Store and they process it as a "device only" purchase. It never enters the "locked" database. It's the same with warranty replacements. The AT&T and T-Mobile phones are "unlocked" until and unless they are specifically associated with a subsidized account at purchase or warranty replacement. That may be 99% of people but some of us have bought device-only phones for the past 3 years from Apple and had one replaced under warranty and never had an issue.

It works on HSPA+ just about everywhere. LTE coverage is pretty spotty in most places outside the US (and even inside the US except for Verizon and a lesser extent AT&T) so not having the right band might not be that big a deal. And the North American models do work in some LTE markets outside the US. The biggest band it is missing is Band 7, which will be used widely in Europe (but some LTE bands that European carriers use are supported by the North American models).

First, all Verizon phones are unlocked

The GSM section is unlocked, but the CDMA section is permanently locked to Verizon. They can't be used with other CDMA carriers.

T-Mobile phones are unlockable after 40 days of service (provided that the phone has been paid in full). So it's only Sprint phones that aren't unlocked or unlockable.

All T-Mobile iPhones now sold by Apple are unlocked out of the box, and all are full price up front. The are shipped with an inactive T-Mobile SIM card which you have to activate by contacting T-Mobile, but you can use any other SIM card.

Ok, just got into this conversation as I have doubts on the the same topic too. I live outside the us, but I've got a friend who's supposed to buy a 5s for me. When you say it is unlocked and I can use any other sim, you are tellin me I will be able to use the iPhone in its full potentials(leaving lte because of the bands). So 3G and everything else will be as it it was an unlocked iphone?

Yes. It has full functionality (at least the Verizon, and full-priced, device-only AT&T and T-Mobile models bought directly from the Apple Store). The US model 5s and 5c are penta-band HSPA, meaning that 3G will work just about everywhere. They have LTE primarily for US bands, but some European bands will work, as well. However, if your carrier uses LTE Band 7 (2600MHz), the US models do not support that band.

You are so wrong! You are costing the poster a lot of money by saying this, ending up with a worthless phone. The phone will only work on AT&T, and ONLY AT&T can authorize unlocking the phone. iTunes and Apple have nothing to do with it. Here is what AT&T says about unlocking: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB414532#fbid=h8Kg6Crkij9
