64 bit kernal mode on Mac 3,1

I have a Mac Pro 3,1 running OS X 10.8.5. Recently I installed a new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Mac graphic card and more ram (now 18 gigs) so I can run DaVinci Resolve. Part of the set up requirements include booting up in 64 bit kernel mode.

Mac paper: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773 describes the sudo command to accomplish this. My playback is still slow so I'm trying to eliminate possible causes.

How do I check to see if I'm now in 64 bit kernel mode? Thanks.

The arrangement of disk and files. Use of SSDs for audio and separate one for system.

SSD have very very low seeks and latency that help a lot

Make sure everything you use is also 64-bit mode, so drivers and extensions, plugins, and apps are. You just increased the address space any task can address and can get 10-15% improvement in some cases.
