My mac isn't allowing the iTunes update on my mountain lion system

I recently tried to do the software update for iTunes and when I click update the button appears grey implying that I can't click on it. If I then click on Featured or another area of App Store and reclick on updates it comes up blank, implying I have no updates?! Very confused and frustrated!
