What kind of media can I use?

I see that my MBP has a 4x Superdrive. I've never had a DVD burner before, so I don't know much about them. What sort of DVD media can I use in this drive?

Is there any functional difference between DVD+R and DVD-R? When should I choose one over the other?

When burning video, will the RW media work in the average DVD player? Aside from cost, is there any drawback to using RW media?

I assume that a higher speed disc (like the 8x and 16x media out there) will just burn at the lower 4x speed. Does the same idea hold true for dual-layer media?

There are some awfully cheap media packs on pricewatch.com. Has anyone had good/bad luck with inexpensive generic media?

you can burn on any kind of dvd, although i prefer dvd-r. dvd-r seems to function better across multiple platforms. whether or not a burned disc will work in your dvd player really depends on the dvd player. i have a dvd player that has played everything that i have burned, and my roommate has a dvd player that is picky with burned dvds, not just from my computer but from his and with discs burned from an external burner. higher speed discs just burn at the highest speed the burner is capable of. only the 17" MBP superdrive can burn dual layer. the 15" are single layer only. but you don't really need dual layer unless you need the space or if you are looking to make professional quality dvds. for dual layer i use an external dvd burner. most of the time i just buy the cheapest dvd-r discs. i really haven't noticed much difference between the cheap ones and more expensive ones besides burn speed.

Evolutionradio is quite correct. The Superdrive will burn a variety of media, but dvd players can be temperamental, so you want media that burns well but also plays on a range of players.

I've used. TDK, Verbatim and Sony media dvd + and dvd - with success. You can get media rated higher than 4x - e.g. the verbatim media I use is 16x.

I've found it pays to shop around for media. Circuit city are quite good, sometimes Best Buy will have a deal when Circuit City don't. I tend to find 50 dvds for around $17 if I look hard when the normal price is around $40. Look online as well as sometimes the stores have a deal online which you can order and pick up, look at the cost per disc - lastly Froogle is useful too - type something like dvd 25 pack or 50 pack and see who has the best price. Currently Best Buy have 100 Fuji dvd discs for $30 which is great value, not tried it though so you might want to buy a single as well to test.

Best of luck
