location based reminders don't work in ios7 ?

after upgrading to ios7 on my iphone 4s the location based reminders don't work if the reminder-app is not open in multitasking.

on ios6 the location based reminders work fine even if the reminders-app is not open and not in background.

is this a bug? the background update option for reminders is activated in the options.

any ideas?

I was having the same issues as everyone else. It was very frustrating because I use location based reminders daily. Someone from the apple store did a DFU restore, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2391217?answerId=11596609022#11596609022&messageID=11596609 , but that did not fix the issue. Then I tried resetting location and privacy and they instantly started working. Maybe the DFU restore was necessary before resetting location and privacy. Also, after the DFU restore I restored my iPhone from backup. I am using iOS 7 on an iPhone 5. It may be important to have Siri tell you to allow access for her and reminders to your location before re-allowing them access. If you have any questions, please ask as I would love to help others with this issue.

Also, it would be best to only make one change at a time and then test. I used Siri's guidance and only changed the setting she requested. Then I would ask Siri again and change the next thing she requested. Third time i asked, everything was working.

Ok, after another restore from DFU AND another reset of location and privacy it looks like it is once again working properly! Strange that repeating the same steps I had taken already mutliple times with support on the phone worked this time, perhaps apple made a subtle change without pushing out a new release?? Eitherway it looks like it is once again working for me, I will update if there are any changes.

abw5 has the fix!!!! As soon as I followed the directions... location based reminders started working perfectly WITHOUT the Reminders app running in the foreground or background (and yes, I looked in my Multi-Tasking application list to make sure Reminders was not running). Now I am absolutely positive that this is a bug and not intended behavior since resetting Location and Privacy completely fixed the issue.

Maybe I spoke too soon! It was working perfectly, showing the reminder geo-fence icon (arrow outline) in the status bar when I had a pending location based reminder. It worked for reminding me when I left a location to call someone back (set while recieving call) and on a reminder I set up through Siri. I made sure the remiders app (and all others) were closed out. The indicator stayed in the status bar and the reminders came up and worked.....until now. Everything is the way it was before, reminders based on location are once again not working. I did not change any settings at all, it just stopped functioning. If I set a reminder through Siri or when recieving a call I am never reminded of the event. Very very frustrating........

This worked for a while, however, as soon as I went in to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > and turned off some of the superfluous settings, location based Reminders stopped working again. I'm going to do some trouble shooting to figure out which one of the System Services is causing it to disable location based reminders. I will check back in with my findings.

That is not how location based reminders should work. Here is the way to make it work as before.

Solution: Navigate to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Location and Privacy.

After resetting location and privacy, ask Siri to remind you to do something when you arrive to (or leave from) a known location. Siri will ask you to give her permission to access your location. Once you have done so, ask Siri to remind you to do something when you arrive to (or leave from) a known location. Siri will then ask you to allow reminders to access your location. Once you have done so, location based reminders should work.

Reminders does not need to be open to get alerts.

Should fix Find My Friends notifications as well.

Allow Reminders to run in background.

I'm sorry to hear it stopped working again. Ever since I applied this fix I have had no issues with reminders or find friends. I have created numerous reminders just to keep testing it and it never fails to remind me. Allow me to list my settings and the changes I have made to my settings since applying the fix.

These are the apps that have access to my location:

Camera, Chrome, Find Friends, Maps, Passbook, Reminders, Siri, TWC (the weather channel), Waze, Weather, and Find My iPhone. That is actually all the apps in my location services list currently. The underlined apps are native.

I have disabled these system services from accessing my location:

Diagnostic and Usage, Location-Based iAds, and Popular Near Me.

I allow these system services to access my location:

Cell Network Search, Compass Calibration, Setting Time Zone, Traffic, Wi-Fi Networking, and Frequent Locations (although I chose not to Improve Maps in Frequent Locations).

Reminders is the only app that has Background App Refresh on.

My Reminders settings:

Sync Reminders 1 Month Back.

Default List is Reminder.

My Notification Center settings for Reminders and Find My Friends:

Alert Style - Alerts

Badge App Icon - on

Reminder Alerts - Signal

Alerts Show in Notification Center

Include 5 Lines

Show on Lock Screen - on

I only use Siri to make reminders.

Before doing the DFU restore, I backed up my iPhone to iCloud. I don't normally use iCloud because I only have 5GB, but this time I did so I could restore from iCloud after the DFU restore. I did not setup my iPhone as new.

Other fix suggestions that I have implemented on my iPhone are:

Disabling Reminders syncing with my exchange e-mail account. Only my iCloud e-mail account syncs Reminders now. I have two other gmail accounts that do not have the option for Reminders syncing. I did this soon after iOS 7 came out. It did not fix the issue, but may be part of the final solution.

As of now, that is all I can think of. If you have the time, please provide your settings and behaviors. Maybe we will be able to find a link that will help others. If there is a setting I did not provide that you think may be important, please indicate.

@ abw5. Thank you for listing all your settings. I"m sure that took quite a bit of time. Unfortunately the only thing that makes my location-based Reminders work (without having it running) is your initial fix of navigating to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Location and Privacy. Once I do that it works perfectly.

However, if I turn off ANYTHING in System Services it will stop working. After resetting location and privacy I navigated to System Services and turned off ONE system service named "Location-Based iAds" and just having that one service turned off killed my location-based Reminders.

I guess I will be waiting for the next iOS 7 update to fix this issue.

Anyone reading this discussion who is experiencing the same problem should definately put in a bug report with Apple. Apple technical issues only come to light when people put in bug reports. You can put one in here:

Make sure you reference this discussion in your report so software engineers can see what people are saying about this issue.

For the record, I too have been experiencing issues, using an iPhone 5, with location based reminders, since

upgrading from iOS6 to iOS7. Interestingly, I have a friend who has an iP5 who upgraded from iOS6 to iOS7 at the same time as me, and he reports no issues with location based reminders.

I have tried all the suggestions in this thread, however none of them have worked for me.

I have put in a bug report with apple but as yet have received no reply in relation to it.

Thanks for all those in this thread attempting to find a solution to this one. I'll keep watching this space for any further advise, and will be sure to post if I find anything that works.
