Q: location based reminders don't work in ios7 ?

after upgrading to ios7 on my iphone 4s the location based reminders don't work if the reminder-app is not open in multitasking.

on ios6 the location based reminders work fine even if the reminders-app is not open and not in background.

is this a bug? the background update option for reminders is activated in the options.

any ideas?

iOS 7.0.3 is available now, but it did not fix the issue for me

Does 7.0.3 fix it for anybody?

I'm curious to know if we're still talking about the same issue. Are those still having trouble experiencing problems with location-based reminders only when Reminders is force quit?

For those who know that Reminders is not in the recent apps list, but haven't force quit it, what's the workflow that causes that to occur?

I've never seen Reminders disappear from my recent apps list, and location-based reminders are working fine for me.

Ok, this might not work for everyone, but it may be worth a try. I have always used location based reminders with Siri. Updating to iOS 7 seemed to stop that from working. I tried all the suggestions here but couldn't get it to work.

    Until I did the following:

Instead of asking Siri to "create a reminder" ( which resulted in a reminder being created but no location information could be added), I told Siri this, "in 8 weeks remind me to make a hair appointment at 7 am when I arrive at work". And it worked! So then I experimented with first asking Siri to "create a reminder", she asked, "just tell me what you want to be reminded about", and I said exactly the same phrase. The difference was that this time there was no location or time attached. It was just a plain old reminder.

I tried this with multiple silly events and times and it resulted in the same thing each time. May be worth a try for people. Good luck!

I believe I have managed to get my location based reminders working. I was hoping updating to 7.0.3 would do it, but no such luck. But after playing around with the settings it looks like they are working.

What I did was turn off reminders in Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> iCloud. Then reset the location and privacy settings in General -> Reset -> Reset Location & Privacy. Then turn reminders back on in iCloud. It will ask you whether reminders can use your location, accept this and then the location based reminders started working for me without the app open in the background.

Make sure you have a location reminder active, close reminders. Try deactivating reminders in iCloud in settings rather than under Mail, Contacts, Calenders. Then reset the location and privacy settings. Turn reminders back on in iCloud again and it should ask you if it can use your location. Does this work now?

    here are my observations.

a geotagged reminder failed to work so I have been reading the thread.

To attempt to fix the issue I turned off reminders in iCloud, reset location and privacy settings, turned on reminders in iCloud.  i was asked (after a pause) if reminders could use location info.  In Location Services a hollow purple location arrow appeared.  it should have been solid as a location reminder was set up.  I adjusted the geofence and the arrow went sold purple so i assume that the system was functioning correctly.  I quit the app.  arrow went grey.  i restarted the app, arrow went hollow purple.  i assume it was failing to recognise that there location aware reminder was in force.  if i, once again, adjust the fence, the arrow in location services goes solid purple.

if you enable another location aware service (eg Siri) the reminders arrow loses its solid purple status.

With further testing, you do not need to actually adjust the geofence, merely get to the screen where you can see the geofence map.

If it is showing a hollow arrow, that means it is working. This is the symbol for geofences. A solid arrow means your EXACT location is being used.

Chalk one up for another user (me!) that cannot get this damm location alert to work for Find my Friends. Ive tried everything including an exorcism of the phone (didnt help! ) to chanting Steve Jobs incantations... nada.

Submitted a support issue to add to the running total. Hopefully, it is effective. Sure wish there was a quick fix for this soon ...

    TheSubmariner,

    Try this.

Navigating to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Location and Privacy. Not sure if you tried this but it has has worked for many people.

Keep in mind that this "fix" might be broken if you turn off/on ANYTHING in System Services.

Anyone reading this discussion who is experiencing the same problem should definately put in a bug report with Apple. Apple technical issues only come to light when people put in bug reports. You can put one in here:

Make sure you reference this discussion in your report so software engineers can see what people are saying about this issue.

The problem is that at this point, it's hard to know what the "same problem" is.

    This was the initial complaint:

after upgrading to ios7 on my iphone 4s the location based reminders don't work if the reminder-app is not open in multitasking.

But the thread now includes Find My Friends and more. Bug reports need to be very specific and repeatable.
