I updated my 27" iMac (late 2012) to OS X 10.8.5 from 10.8.4 and during the restart the system crashes with a "Panic.. Kernel trap" message. Here's a screen shot:
I managed to start the system holding down CMD-R and chose Restore from Backup to restore the system as it was before the update.
Is there any way to update to 10.8.5 without it crashing? Any tips appreciated.

Forgot to mention that it happened twice. I tried to update a week ago and it crashed. After the restore back to 10.8.4 there were no updates available in the app store until today. So I tried it again with the same result.
Also, before the restore I used Disk utility to verify the disk. No errors were reported.
I suggest you install a clean copy of 10.8.5 on an external drive and try to boot from it. If you can't, see below.
