G4-12" , My older iBook does not display a usable screen - there is a barely disernable image when you peer closely- But cabled to TV monitor through the adaptor I get a display on the TV/Monitor I use! I don't use the G4 much anymore but I like it when I take a trip and want to pack light.
Any ideas on what is wrong and what to do about it?

Sound to me like the display backlight has gone. This could also be a fault with the inverter board.
You have two choices, you could replace the complete screen assembly yourself if your able to, or simply use a repair shop. An apple authorised repair shop maybe able to assist you.

The simplest test is that of what you have already done. Just connect to an external monitor.
If it works fine on an external monitor then it can't be the GPU. That leave the other possible parts. Display, invert board or video cable.
