Sound to me like the display backlight has gone. This could also be a fault with the inverter board.
You have two choices, you could replace the complete screen assembly yourself if your able to, or simply use a repair shop. An apple authorised repair shop maybe able to assist you.

The simplest test is that of what you have already done. Just connect to an external monitor.
If it works fine on an external monitor then it can't be the GPU. That leave the other possible parts. Display, invert board or video cable.
