FWIW. I have installed iOS7 on my iPad 3, iPhone 4 & 5G iPod Touch. None of the installs has affected either my 4G 802.11n AirPort Extreme or 4G Time Capsule what so ever.

It may be possible that the installation on your iPad 2 may have not completed properly and potentially why it cannot access your AirPort Express. Can it see and connect to other Wi-Fi networks?

It is unlikely your Express has been affected after upgrading your iPad to iOS 7. It is more likely that your iPad simply cannot connect to your Express, and you simply need to reset your iPad's network settings.

To do that, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the chevron next to your wireless network name and then "forget this network".

Tap it again to choose it.

If that does not work, then try Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

I can no longer play audio through my Airport Express, but I have no idea what caused this. I installed iTunes 11.1 yesterday, along with iOS 7 on an iPhone 5 and an iPad 2. But we discovered the Airport Express wasn't working today, when my wife's iPhone, which is still on iOS 6, couldn't connect. I installed a firmware update for the Airport, and it worked briefly, but now nothing is connecting: with iTunes on my computer, I get "An error occurred while connecting to the airplay device ... the network connection timed out". With the iPhones and iPad (one on iOS 7, one on iOS 6), the phone itself is behaving normally - no error message - but nothing is coming out of the speakers.

So who knows if our problems have the same cause, but they seem to have the same symptoms.

I'm curious what's happening for others with Airport Express devices that aren't working. In my case, it's simply now impossible to get sound coming out of it. All my devices and computers initially THINK it should work - they all show the Airport Express. But when I try to play, it doesn't work, with slightly varying responses:

  • iPhone 5 and iPad 2, both on iOS7: if I choose the Airport Express, they continue to play as if through the Airport for about 20 seconds (with progress along the little progress/scrub bar), and then just stop playing. No error message or anything.
  • On my computer, through iTunes 11.1: it thinks for a while, with the "Connecting to ___'s Airport Express" thing going at the top of the screen, until I get the "An error occurred while connecting to the airplay device ... the network connection timed out" message. The little chevron (?) in the upper left side, that lets us "Choose which speakers to use", becomes orange rather than blue, and when I click on that, the Airport Express listing now has an exclamation mark inside a warning sign.
  • On an iPhone 4, with iOS6: basically the same as with the iOS7 devices. It seems to "think" it's playing through the Aiport Express, and then after about 30 seconds just reverts to the iPhone speaker and stops playing, with no error message.

Note that through all this the Airport Express has its green light and seems to think it's working fine, with an "Excellent" connection, according to the Airport Utility.

I've tried turning basically everything off and on; everything is as up to date as I can make it, except that iPhone 4; I've forgotten and added networks; I've reset network settings; I've added and taken away a password from the Airport Express Airplay speakers (because, hey, why not). I'm not sure what else there even is to do: maybe tomorrow I'll head in to an apple store and see if I can use the AirPlay from my iPhone to play on one of their Airport Expresses? If they even have any set up?

Outside chance of the cause - could my wifi network somehow be confused because it's dealing with both iOS6 and iOS7? Does that make any sense at all? (Not that my wife is going to be the least bit eager to upgrade to iOS7 after hearing me swear profusely over the past couple of days!)

Congrats, clarkfromgermantown!

It looks like my problem may be solved too, by the somewhat obvious step of not just turning everything on and off, but actually resetting the Airport Express:

  1. Hold a paperclip/pen in the little recessed reset button on the Airport Express. Press and hold for about 5 seconds, until it starts flashing yellow: this began a hard reset. (Who knows, maybe a soft reset would have been enough.)
  2. Wait a couple of minutes while the Airport Express flashes yellow and disappears from my computer's knowledge.
  3. Eventually add it back to the network (for what it's worth, I renamed it, although I doubt that matters), set it up again, activate AirPlay.
  4. And it now works with all devices.

Whew. There's one problem apparently solved. Now back to the nightmare over in podcast-listening land.
