I just got my phone last year and I am having this problem, I love apple products but this is a big inconvenience to everyone who is having the same problem, help. Thanks.

Since my iPhone 4S was out of warranty and I wasn't willing to buy a new phone (at least not yet), I took a risk and went to a third-party repair shop that was cheap, reliable, and highly recommended -- but not accredited by Apple. Anyway, they opened up my iPhone 4s, blasted the wifi chip with a specialized heat gun (just like the hairdryer method!!!), let it cool for a few minutes, and blasted it again. They did three or four passes, and then screwed the casing and all the other fiddly bits back in.

My screen started flickering at that point -- but they told me that it was just the LCD adjusting to being heatblasted and it would be back to normal in ten minutes. It did normalize after ten or twenty minutes, but the best part was that my WiFi and Bluetooth issues have been fixed -- and stayed fixed! No more settings resets every five minutes, no more quick trips to the fridge, no more frustration -- worth every penny of the USD 25 I paid for the fix!

Long story short: the hair dryer method works better than the fridge method, if you know what you're doing; better leave that to a trusted technician than to DIY lest you permanently damage your phone.

I'm agree with you, I've followed the same process and I've done it by my self, cause I work in a electronic repair center. I've just used hot air to make a reflow to the wifi chip and then it works since November 2013 without problems.

Be careful if you want to do it by your self, because Apple uses IR to weld components, hot air can be dangerous for the iPhone!

Guys,

I just try to JB my iphone 4S and it frozen during the process.

According the development team this was due a problem with on-air updates.

In consequence I had to restore my device and itunes downloaded a fresh and complete IOS7.0.4 to my device.

After this new instalation, everything start working perfectly, even wifi with no additional reste or so.

So, if you have this problem:

1) back-up your device;

2) put your device on DFU move;

3) restore your device as fresh phone

it should work.

Best regards

Had my first iphone 4s for 10months. All was great. Updated to ios7 wifi greyed out. Went to Apple genius they swapped it out with a new phone after I backed everything up. Said it was hardware.

All was under warranty. Free phone. It grayed out again, again another free phone. Said maybe hardware, maybe software. Third time grayed out. Free phone, all under warranty. Fourth phone started fresh didn't download a stinkin thing. Two weeks grayed out again. Free phone swap. Fifth phone started with a fresh phone. Got a new power cord. They said it was the only common thing. Well.... after 3 weeks it's grayed out again. Waiting for my SUPER GENius appointment to get my sixth phone,

I only used the new Apple power cord.

Have any of you gotten Apple to pay to finish out your contract cuz that's what I want.

Such a pain.

ohhh and the Apple genius said... He's never heard of anyone having this problem before, maybe once but not five times! All they can do is give me more phones. As I understand it I get 3 months warranty for each phone.

I agree I found a friendly company in Bromley that followed this process for me and charged me £25. Apple Bromley quoted £140 or offered £6 trade in! They further claimed they had never seen the problem before - and I was born under a gooseberry bush!

I am a huge Apple fan and have personally owned 3 Mac Pro's, 5 Macbook Pro's 2 ipads, 9 iphones, 5 ipods. My company owned 12 Macpros.

What has gone wrong - the iphone 4s is a poor piece of gear i had my first 4 replaced immediately then a further 2 replaced and finally1 more. Then 1 month out of warranty the wifi greyed out problem happened on 1 and a month later another of the phones started crashing regularily. I have followed all the advice from Apple and none of it has worked. This is a premium (supposedly) piece of equipment or at least the price was (£500) - I can't say I will replace them when I am out of contract as I am informed that every other major phone supplier offers a 2 year warranty i.e. for the lencgth of the contract.

Finally some of the people on this support feed are genuinly helpful but a special mention must go to that annoying little tic that obviously works for Apple or is so far up their backside that he has lost sight of what is right and fair.I don't need to name him as anybody that has followed this feed will know to whom I am referring.

Enough.

It sounds like there may be some corrupt user data causing issues. Only way to tell for sure is to eliminate that, if possible.

I recommend setting up the device as a 'new' device, and not restoring from any backups. Re-input your contacts and calendars manually. Download only the Apps that you need to use. Run the device in as minimilaist of a mode as possible. Try it like that for 3 weeks. If the wi-fi doesn't grey out, then it may be something in your backups causing a glitch.

As long as it works, that's all that truly matters. Out of curiousity, does the repair shop provide a warranty for its work? That's the only concern I have about third-party repairs. Too often I hear of repairs that work for a while, but then a few weeks later, it fails... and then the repair shop refuses to do anything else.

I highly recommend getting, in writing, a guarantee for the work performed. In my opinion, it should at least equal Apple's, which is 90-days on a replacement.

Hey Thanks but we already tried all this. My last two phones were set up as "new". I didn't download anything from backup and I did not put any apps on. I only put on Google maps on but not until I had it for two weeks. I didn't even put any contacts in. I only used it to call, text, take a few pictures, surf the web, check my email and watch a few videos.

I don't use the phone heavily.

All they do is hand me a "new" factory refurb phone and I'm out the door only to be back again in 2 to 4 weeks. One of the phones only lasted 4 days, and I did nothing.

Going in for number 6 tomorrow.

Our house runs 2 printers, netflix, 3 laptop pcs, my hubby's Droid Galaxy and an ipod all with no wi fi problems.

Again.. Not until I updated to ios7 did I have any problems with my 4S. I had it for 10 months no problems. My wi fi went gray within a day of the update. I had been annoyed with the CONSTANT "need to update" I got sick of it and updated. I wish I hadn't.

Hello there

Try this:

- Perform a backup in your PC/MAC;

- conect your iphone 4S with PC and put it in DFU mode(press Power and home for 10 sec. After release power button and keep pressing home button until the pc recognize the iphone).

- restore your iphone as fresh instalation. Itunes will donwload a full copy of ios7.0.4 and install it.

- after that restore your apps and user data.

I did ir like that and wifi is working 100% now. It seens that the issue was related to On-Air IOS update.

Hope this helps.

Hello Athong,

During the process, did the Itunes asked to restore as a "New Phone"?

This is very important as this is the point when it decides to download the op system again.

At least this was how the worked for me.

Im my case, I just tryed to jailbrake(in the attempt to solve the wifi issue) my device and it frozen during the process. So the recovery from scracht was not a choice. And after that the phone is back working just fine.
