Q: Wifi greyed out on iphone 4s with ios 7

Hi, I have iphone 4s, before when I update my ios to 6.1.3 I got a problem connecting to my wifi it was greyed out. I researched some tips how to solve the problem still it doesn't work. They said that if you update your ios into ios 7 the issue will be solved, however I update my ios now into ios 7, I still have the same issue, tried some troubleshooting again still problem doesn't solve, help please I cannot use my wifi. I just got my phone last year and I am having this problem, I love apple products but this is a big inconvenience to everyone who is having the same problem, help. Thanks.

Surely the issue is that Apple didnt offer this solution  either centrally or via these forums  to their myriad customers worldwide.!    The triffling worry of a warranty ( out of date anyway!) being voided pales into insignificance.  Poor show chaps!

My original post describing (unauthorised!) replacment of wi fi chip solving the problem quite simply, and the associated replies has been removed from this forum! As no doubt this message will be. Why?

Be good to perhaps involve the Office of Fair Trading in the UK.   I can see this brewing up a huge negative for Apple, and deservedly so.

P.S to previous- Not removed but relegated out of sight of most recent postings.   Replace the wi fi chip. Job done!

Hate to tell you, but it's not that big of a deal.  So few customers are actually affected by this defect that it is not that big of an issue, on the large scale.  Apple is replacing defective devices that are within warranty, and offering a discounted replacement (with a 90 day warranty) on devices that have an expired warranty.

Warranty still valid = Free Replacement.

    Warranty expired = Discounted Replacement.

    Very simple.

Okay, but a simple posting saying its a wifi chip replacement to solve problem and/or  if in warranty your device will be replaced at the nearest Apple Store  its what any trader worth their salt and with a whiff of concern for their customer base should have done!

I think the main issue here is not is it a software or hardware problem it is the fact that Apple are denying me the right to switch the wifi on. This is a major function in the operation of this handset, so by negating this option they are denying me the full operation of this phone as designed and advertised under the Trades Description Act, regardless whether the wifi connects or not.

Only Apple know what parameters are measured to determine if the wifi is to be greyed out or not, and it is this they need to clarify to ascertain what or whom is at fault.

Apple isn't denying you anything though. You have or had a warranty. Once that is up, Apple owes you nothing by law (in the US at least).

Without changing your oil your engine would fail. Without installing iOS 7, you would still have iOS 6.

@Evan W - Of course it would work if you hadn't upgraded to iOS7. But your car doesn't assault you with notification and alerts - on your phone and when you sync with iTunes - to upgrade to the latest iOS version!

It should be Pull not Push. Of course it's my risk when I do so but Apple should not be pushing it to you as if it will work fine.

At the least that is disingenuous on the part of apple and evil

Will replacing the wifi antennae (myself) definitely sort the problem?

Apple doesn't authorize non-Apple repair centers to perform component replacement.  Doing so voids the warranty.  You think they should recommend a course of action that would void any and all warranty service in the future?

You can turn off the notifications on iTunes.  And you can move the Settings icon to a different hom screen, if that little number '1' is so distracting to you.

    Mine is FIXED!

This is not a joke and I am serious

After upgrading my iPhone 4S to 7.0.3 I had problem with my wifi for a week; it was also very SLOW sometimes; I tried EVERYTHING! eg restore, battery drain; restart; flight mode etc; I also asked about the wifi chip replacement from the unauthorised apple repair guy, he said it is part of the motherboard and cannot be changed and easier to say goodbye to your phone

Originally I laughed and made a joke about the FREEZER solution! I also read so many posting about the heat issue. I was VERY FRUSTRATED and ANGRY so to just to prove to myself the heat theory I

    - turned my phone off

    - placed it in a sealed bag

    - put it in a freezer for 20-30 minutes

    - tried to turn it on the battery was Completely FALT

    - connected to charger and waited to be charged

    - I turned it on and surprisingly the wifi started to WORK!

Wow! I was expecting the phone to heat up again after few hours etc! But it has been fine for four days now

I cannot explained it but I am happy :-) maybe the freezer reset something or freezes a real BUG!

If you are at the end of the road like I was, you might like to try this solution

Good Luck , I hope it works for you too
