nano/pico backspace button

hello all

We have a set up a debian box as a proxy server. When I ssh into the machine, and run nano or pico (from my mac) the backspace key does not work the way it works when you ssh into a Mac box. It deletes the letter in front of the cursor, rather than the letter behind it. Anyone else have this problem? Or a workaround. vi and vim aren't my favourites 😟

First thing to try: Terminal -> Preferences

Set terminal type from "xterm-color" to "xterm". Create a new terminal window, and ssh in. See if that helps.
<hr>If that doesn't help:

Terminal -> Window Settings -> Keyboard

Try toggling the setting on "Delete key sends backspace". If this works, and doesn't screw up other applications, save that as the default.
