Is my newly bought Apple TV useless with my recently updated 4s? No airplay or mirroring

Hearing and reading the whole thing with version prior to 2011 but do think this is hog wash...I have iTunes which I use on the same exact system which allows me to connect using the Airplay within iTunes to my Apple TV so why would I am not able to connect using the computers interface? Because of some part....again makes no sense...
Why is it hog wash? For the person who posted the question it was solved 10 months ago.
Probably in the wrong feed...the statement applies to AirPlay and reasoning why it does not work with laptops older than X date. At one point I read that it was due to certain capabilities of a part and the capability of that part having version X. The thing I do not understand is why if this is the case why does AirPlay work for iTunes on my laptop X date and older but not work to share my screen? In the end placed content in this feed one very tired night.
Can i unlock my phone through my apple id if show how?
