If you are seeing further alternatives, then you are pressing too hard. That is 3D Touch. If the app opens, then you are not leaving your finger there long enough. All you need to do is touch your finger on the app you are trying to delete and gently hold it there until it starts to wiggle, then you will see the ✖ and you can delete it. So long as it is an app that can be deleted, as not all of them can be. See this page from the iPhone User Guide. http://help.apple.com/iphone/10/#/iph248b543ca
If you continue to experience problems, then you can temporarily turn off 3D Touch, go to Settings>General>Accessibility>3D Touch, and turn it off. Turn it back on after you delete the app if you rely on 3D Touch for accessing certain applications.
When I TOUCH the app icon, hold, press harder, or not!! It either opens or show a screen with further alternatives, NOT INCLUDING 'delete'. Tried sliding app different directions. Same result. Is there NOT a SIMPLE FREE way to delete a non-apple app! Frustration surging, wanting my good ole I5 back! Gack!
Greetings.
This reply may be a bit late, but maybe it will help someone in the future. The other suggestions of lightly holding the icon on the screen does work but can be a bit peculiar.
Below is a method I use to avoid that frustration.
Settings/General/Storage&iCloud Usage/Manage Storage/
Select App
Click Delete App
Note: There may be two instances of Manage Storage, use the top one or first one.
iPhone 7 Plus.
I was having the same problem with a app that wouldn't delete but kept saying "share". By accident I found that if you press and hold on another app (let's use garage band for an example) and it goes to the shaking with the X in the corner....the app that wouldn't delete earlier was now also shaking and had the little X in the corner and could then be deleted.
I would think that if I chose something and then didn't want it any longer it should be at my discretion and choice to remove it from the phone I own and purchased.
Hold down your finger on the unwanted app and wait a second and then click the X on the app you want to delete. Only certain apps can be deleted.
The question is I cannot see the "x" after hold down the home button in this new iOS.
It's there...it just may be hard to see...like I said though...only certain apps have the X as others cannot be deleted.

You made no mention of the x here
Double check your restrictions.
Thanks! I can't see the X because of the restriction. 🙂
You do not hold the home button, you press on the app for a couple of seconds. Then the x appears.
Those with no x are Apple native apps that cannot be deleted. If you want to get them out of the way, just put them in a folder out of your view.
You're welcome.
I hold down one app icon, they all start to wiggle, X's appear in the upper-corner of many of the apps. But when I click an X, the option to delete the app apprears, but when I click delete, nothing happens.
Also, the apps I want to delete are old downloaded apps, not apps that come with the iPhone.
Also, the apps I want to delete are all dark gray. When I try to activate one of the dark gray apps, it says "Waiting" but the app does not open, nothing ever happens.
Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, i'm having the same issue. i can't even delete them on my MacBook in iTunes. and on the old system, i could delete the Apple originated apps like Game Center and Stocks (for which i've never had a use).
Any help would be great appreciated!
I have the same problem on an iPhone 4; appears to be a recurring iOS 7 bug (not fixed in latest iOS 7 update). It appears some apps get stuck in an update (I only do manual updates) and then there's no way to cancel or correct the problem, except doing a full reboot, which seems to fix it--only to happen again another day...
Same problem here. Old apps are in black with "x", but once I hit "X" and delete, nothing happens as well. I laso deleted the apps themselves in itunes but when I sync it, still no avail, the unwanted apps are still there. Any jelp would be appreciated.
