Contacts should be "living" on your computer (Outlook Address Book) or in the cloud (iCloud, Google). The phone is merely a device to allow you to carry your contacts with you portably. Simply synch the contacts back to your phone from wherever they are "living".

You HAVE been using your phone as designed, right?

I couldn't agree more. Snarky, know it all answers have no place, especially when protocols that have been in place for over 4 years have been quietly changed. (So, what, now I have to buy iCloud to back up my stuff, OR know that I have to changes all the settings on a backup system I've been using seamlessly since i can't remember?)

sheesh.

My iPhone had removed my contacts after the update. But I had made the mistake of not checking my settings. I did back up to the cloud. But when I came to restore NO backup was there.

I was lucky I have a iPad I backed up the info on there then loaded that to my phone.

I had reset my phone so I had to I put everything

Now with all the good people complaining about theses problems WHY is apple doing nothing.

I have had calls dropped loss of signal not being able to end calls oh yes messenger being delayed

Apple what are you doing?

I have had a iPhone for for a few years and iPad iPod and even Apple TV

I think its time for a change

When will they learn if its not broke don't fix it

Try asking customers before you change things

Seems this is happening on every iOS update now. preetisaini's advice worked except in reverse for me. Contacts was "On" and I turned it "Off" and then back to "On" and everything was back. Additionally, contacts now show up in Outlook under a separate iCloud heading and contacts that I had deleted years ago have returned.

I'm relly fed up with this. I had this happening to me when updating my itunes. All my playlists and music was just gone completely disappeared. Even the itunes library wasn't there so I had to manually add the playlist with my phone.

Today it happened with my iphone.I did the update iOS 7.0.4. and then it went on restore mode with the itunes and plug on screeen right after I pressed "update". So I had my latest backup (three weeks ago) put on my phone but this is very upseting. I don't know how to express the anger this causes and how they can't even tell you before you update to do a backup. I heard so many people are having this problem. We shouldn't be scared to do a simple update.

I strongly suggest anyone to make sure you have a backup for your iphone. Also, buy a terabite hard drive and have all your music and everything there because we will never know the next time all our personal information gets wipped 'just because'.

No iPhone owner should have to go through this every time Apple decide to do an upgrade. It seems to me Apple, your set on losing customers, not keeping them?

How do I know your losing customers?... not only am I an iPhone owner, but I work for Telstra. The amount of complaints I get every day about iPhones and the amount of people wanting to desperately pay out x-amount of dollars to break their contracts, just so they can get rid of the iPhone altogether is astounding.

It might be an idea if you hire a programmer that knows what they are doing and can do fully tested examples against any new updates, before actually releasing them to the public?

This is why I myself will be changing to Samsung when my contract is up!
