Q: Home sharing on iDevices not loading large library

I store my entire music library (3TB of ALAC files) on a Mac Mini connected to my Time Capsule. I can home share the library flawlessly on my laptop, but it absolutely refuses to load the library on my iPhone or iPad. I'm using all the latest software (iOS7, iTunes 11.1) with an iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

When I try to share my library, the circle starts to load, but never gets past halfway. I've tried EVERYTHING, i.e. signing out of home sharing and quitting iTunes, restarting the Mac Mini, restarting the iPhone, unplugging the Time Capsule and plugging it back in, and several other tips I've found around here and elsewhere online, but nothing seems to work!

I have other apps (such as Audiotap) that will do the trick, but they leave a gap between tracks, so I would prefer to get home sharing working properly. Thanks in advance for any help.

I use the remote app a lot, even if they could just add a "play to this device" feature, i'd be content.

just me, or is text input on this board all messed up? Apple, Apple, what have you become?

Same problem. iPad 3rd gen and iPhone 5 just get tired of the spinning red circle and crap out. Time to email Tim...

I've updated everything across the board and I'm still having the issue. I finally caved and purchased Plex for my mobile device and it reads my iTunes library just fine. Why is it that within an Apple environment, Plex can do what iTunes can't?

It’s not because it can’t do it.

It’s simply not programmed to do it.

Why is it that Plex cannot play iTunes purchased movies?

The Apple environment is not programmed to do it? Then what, exactly, is Home Sharing programmed to do? Share breakfast? Share its toys? No, it's programmed to share music from my iTunes library over to my mobile device. And yet, with a library over a certain size, it seems to be tanking for many of us here and more. Plex, however, seems to do the job. I will add, to be fair, that Plex does it poorly - the organization, among other features, is attrocious. But, for the love of St. Pete, at least my library shows up in Plex.

Sorry, got a bit confused with another thread...

It works fine for many people but some (this thread & others) are having issues.

If the answer was simple, likely it would have been sorted.

Fair enough. Thanks for tolerating me being droll.

I appreciate the complexity of media services in any bit of development. I do, however, see that this issue has been persistent for more than a year. I can also say that other bits of independent development have had better success with it. But, that doesn't address your point about the whys of it not working. I might add another suggestion that has nothing to do with complexity. Most users don't have large iTunes libraries. I don't know what most means, but more than 50% suits me. So, if most users don't have large iTunes libraries, AND Apple is interested in promoting cloud services, streaming content, radio, and downloads, there is no real economic incentive for them to focus on people who prefer to amass their own collections. Apple would rather push the majority of listeners to where they're already going, which is toward a way of interacting with media that is more demand-based and thus revenue-based. In the meanwhile, they're pushing us with them. It shouldn't be so hard to get our devices to read what is a relatively small XML file over LAN and prepare a GUI index from it. In my book, it seems like the initiative may be lacking.

Landed on this site while searching for a solution:

    http://ios.wonderhowto.com/how-to/turn-any-ipad-iphone-ipod-touch-into-airplay-r eceiver-without-jailbreaking-0156869/

just tried it, works like a charm!! You first have to change the Airplay speakers in iTunes to AirFloat but as long as you don't change it, it'll remember the next time you start playback with Remote and open AirFloat!

So easy, yet Apple can't even do it right!

Same here with an iPad Air 2 (128 GB).  Video loads the shared library, then the cover art starts to load and 2 minutes later the app closes.

My iPad 1 on 5.1.1 crashes as it tries to load a 900 GB library.

I've been getting board with this on iOS8.  PITA.  (As is iTunes in general these days ... great for not playing purchased content).

    Try this :

    On iOS device.

Quit Music app  (double-click Home button the drag upwards)

Sign out of Home Sharing (Settings-Music)

    Reset Network Settings (Settings-General-Reset-Network Settings)

Sign in to your WiFi (all network settings have been reset, so you're no longer connected)

    Re-join Home Sharing (Settings-Music)

Open Music app and load your shared library

Thanks, tried your steps and video library starts to load the covert art and program closes  a few minutes into that process.

Unfortunately no change.  I have an iPad Air 2 128 GB and and iPad 1 32GB both do the same thing.  My iPhone 6 however works just fine.

Same here.  Windows 7 PC iTunes serving media to:

2 Apple TV's - Latest OS versions - Both work great

    2 iPhone 4s - 8.1.2 - slow or doesn't load at all, useless

    2 iPad 2's - 8.1.2 - slow or doesn't load at all, useless

1 iPad Mini - 8.1.1 - slow or doesn't load at all, useless

Called tech support.  They talked me into reseting one of the iPad 2s to factory defaults and "starting from scratch."   Didn't work.

Basically, this feature has been broken since iOS 6 days.  I'm now going to try re-building the library and slowly adding content to see if some ID3 tags or their equivalent in M4V/MP4 files may have corruption that causes this.  I have a 1.75 TB library of movies, TV shows, and music that comes from our own ripped optical media and a handful of iTunes purchases.  Have been using iTunes to tag music, and MetaX to tag DVD and BR media.

    I am similar to you

    3 ATC - Works Great

2 iPhones - Slow or doesn't load at all

2 iPads 8.x - Slow or doesn't load at all

1 iPad Air 2 - Slow or doesn't load at all

    1 iPad 1 5.x - Slow or doesn't load at all

Tech support has been useless, Checked my ID3 tags and nothing.

Everything is good, the problem is that the iDevices are simply not working

    with large libraries.
