Hi Kennard:
I'm sorry that the current responses have been along the lines of "Apple doesn't make a DVD player" when you clearly meant connecting the Apple USB SuperDrive to your AppleTV.
You mentioned that you already have the Apple USB SuperDrive (or "Apple DVD Player") that you use with your MacBook Air, correct?
Unfortunately, the AppleTV does not support connecting the Apple USB SuperDrive (it would actually be great if it did for those of us that have large DVD-Video libraries).
However, you can watch your DVDs via your AppleTV indirectly.
You will need to download an application called HandBrake (which I think is still freeware) and install it onto your MacBook Air. it does for DVD-Video discs what iTunes does for Compact Discs. You'll use Handbrake to extract the DVD-Video stream and convert it to an MP4 file. You can then add the MP4 file to your iTunes library. With Home Sharing enabled in iTunes on your MacBook Air (File > Home Sharing > Turn Home Sharing On), you can watch any of the movies that are in your iTunes library on your AppleTV.
It's a few hoops to jump through and you need to have the extra storage for the extracted movies (allow between 1GB to 1.5GB per movie if using the "High Profile" setting in HandBrake), but you can offload the ones you've already watched to an external USB3 drive easily enough if needed.

using a microUSB converter to his / her appletv and expect it to make the appletv play dvds
Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can't connect a DVD player of any brand and Apple don't make DVD players in any case. A DVD player should be connected directly to your TV or audio system if you have one.
Apple does make seperate CD/DVD-stations that I can connect to my Macbook AIr anyway, using USB. Question is whether the mini-USB-connector on the Apple TV actually recognizes this device, or not. Ergo, is the USB-connection on the Apple TV specifically meant foruopdating the system, or can it also be used to connect other devices?

The short answer is no.
There is a difference between the superdrive and a CD/DVD player in that the superdrive has to be controlled by software on the host device in order to use it. The Apple TV does not have such software. A CD/DVD player would be a stand alone device and wouldn't need to be controlled from the Apple TV, but the Apple TV would need to accept input over the USB port, which it doesn't. Apple don't make such devices and in any case such a device regardless of being made by Apple or another company won't work with the Apple TV.
no the usb connector is only for restoring the firmware
appletv is an ios device
so like you cant connect most usb devices to ipads and iphones so you can't do it that way
