I'm hoping to get a sim free, unlocked iPhone 5c to use in the US, but will need to use it regularly in the UK, with a uk based SIM (O2 would be the carrier) Am I going to face difficulties or will it be ok. Do I need to ask for a specific firmware model or something when I go into the store?
I heard the 5 had compatibility problems, but can't find any info on whether they have been fixed for the 5c

Any unlocked iPhone purchased from the US will likely not be compatible with the LTE bands in the UK and Europe. Other than that, the phone should work fine with any supported carrier.

this will explain why LTE is not compatible across geographies
3G is standard ,LTE is not and depends on sets of bands and if IIRC there is no chip available to handle all bands worldwide
ps the models are only available in the geographies they support
So, just to get this straight. Apart from the super fast LTE data (which I'm not fussed about), using it for calls & basic 3G data, there should be no problems at all regardless of which carrier I use?

For what it's worth, I purchased my iPhone 5 unlocked (not 5S or 5C, I guess it's the same) during the time I was living in the States. I'm now back to Spain and it's working nicely with 3G and my local carrier. No drop calls, no internet issues.

Yes an unlocked iPhone from Corporate Apple will work just about anywhere ( not a sim free in US)
The warranty will be vested in which ever country you purchase however
