iOS 7 and Smart Playlist Handling

In iOS 7, smart playlist handling isn't working as "smartly" as before. Here are two examples dealing with song ratings...

If you try to sync a smart playlist containing only songs assigned ZERO-STARS, the songs will transfer over to the iPhone, but the playlist will show up empty.

If you sync a (live-updating) smart playlist containing songs assigned FIVE-STARS, the playlist will appear as expected, but it won't "live update" as it did in iOS 6. For example, if you change a song's rating to FOUR-STARS, it won't move out of the FIVE-STAR smart playlist until you sync with your Mac.

If you guys know of any tricks to make this work again, let me know! :-)

I have a similar problem. I have smart playlists in iTunes on my PC to organise my many tv shows. These playlists have no music tracks in them. However, since iOS 7 and new iPhone, and not before, these playlists are synced to my iPhone music player as empty playlists, which really clogs up the player, and they have a picture attached them from a completely unrelated music album! Deleting playlists off phone deletes them off iTunes at next synch. Holding out for a fix.

The reference to another Playlist removes the Smart Playlist from iCloud. I wonder if this is where the problem lies? It is strange because the iTunes Match smart playlist on a device correctly reflects the iTunes smart playlist but local syncing doesn't.

Anyway, thanks for this temporary fix which works with zero rated items and smart playlists with play counts etc as well.

i have almost 5500 songs. Its scary thinking about changing the stars.... 😮 Its really bad for me since I use my iPad to DJ. So for the last week or so I have not been able to update/sync my ipad. I got sort of lucky because I tested the new ios 7 on my iphone before i loaded it on the ipad. But, still, i have a problem here. I see similar cases as some other people. I can sync my purchased songs for sure, and also some songs that I know for sure i converted from my old records. So, its a big ?.

Hey Guys,

As soon as i removed the date added rule rom my playlist and added a new rule 'playlist is - recently added' it worked.

Not sure if this is because of the date added rule being removed, having a playlist as a rule or if its something to do with icloud (because if you have a rule linking to a playlist in icloud it only allows it locally) but not sure if everyone here uses icloud.

Folks,

Especially for the person about to redo their stars ratings...YIKES... I found a simple fix to this problem after trying a number of variables -- on Smart Playlists, simply uncheck "Live updating", and then re-sync.

All the content in your Smart Playlists will now show on your iPhone.

No need to change all your Smart Playlist variables -- been there, done that, and none of the rule changes made any difference. The only thing that made a difference was unchecking "Live updating."

I submitted this as a bug report to Apple. Time to fix something that worked very well in iOS6 and early versions.

Cheers!

I'm having the same issue. I have a playlist that excludes 1 and 2 star songs. I want it to include all unrated songs and songs with a rating greater than 2. I see all my 3, 4 and 5 star songs but no 0 star songs. The songs are on my phone and they even show up in the On This Phone tab but not in my playlist when I open the Music app. With every major release of iOS, my playlist get screwed up on my phone. I hope they fix it very soon!
