I have a problem burning a dvd of a slideshow I have made using iDVD.

I have created a simple DVD containing a title page and a slideshow, but when I burn it I am unable to play the disc on a PC or dvd player. I might be being stupid, but why is this?

When I put the DVD into a PC it shows two folders, Audio_TS and Video_TS. Neither has a playable file in them.

I didn't think it would be this complicated to create a dvd of a slideshow that I can show to people.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

That is the correct content of any DVD in the standard mpeg2 format and the DVD should play on anything that can play DVDs!

Did you give the disk a title?

To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

Hi Klaus

Thank you very much for your reply.

I used that guide to create the slideshow to begin with, it all works ok. It's just that it won't seem to play on machines other than my own.

The disk has a title, which shows when you put it in a PC.

I am using a dvd+r to burn onto, not sure if that effects things at all?

Are there any obvious mistakes that I could have made or ways to check if what I have burned is theoretically correct?

Thanks again for your help.

It can, for two main reasons:

Not all DVD players 'like' home-made' DVDs, and some struggle with DVD+R, preferring DVD-R. As for Windows PCs, who knows what they like! 😉

Different brands of media can make a difference: Most of us here use Verbatim DVD-R, and burn at no more than 2x or 4x burn speed.

Hi Klaus.

Thanks again for your help. I think I will try getting some Verbatim DVD-R discs and turning the burn speed down like you suggest. I'm just pleased that it doesn't seem like I am doing anything fundamentaly wrong.

The frustrating this is, I was stupid enough to take the advice of some young whippersnapper in the electrical department of my local Tesco with regards to which blank DVD's to buy. I asked him what the difference between -R and +R was and he said "Nothing really. But get +R just to be on the safe side." I told him what I wanted them for and he said that Tesco's own +R discs would do the job perfectly. It seems I was a bit naive in believing he knew what he was talking about.

And as for knowing what Windows PCs like, I gave up trying to figure that out a long time ago. Makes my blood boil sometimes having to use one for work. We bought three new ones in our office in June, key functions have either stopped working or begun to work intermittently already. As far as I can tell, they mainly want throwing in the bin.

Anyway, rant over. Hopefully with those tips I can manage to produce a dvd which will play on one of the blasted things.

Many thanks.

Tesco's?? 😮

What do they know?! He couldn't be more wrong! By the way, you can get Verbatim disks in Sainsbury's! 😉

Tesco's own-label media is some of the worst on the market:

More information on DVD-R v. DVD+R here:

and (about coating quality):

and that last article includes information on where (in the US) you can buy Taiyo Yuden media.

Also, this guide to what brands of DVD are the most reliable (and who makes them) is invaluable:

Unfortunately the nearest Sainsburys to me is over an hours drive away! But I'm sure I can source some verbatim disks locally, or failing that get some delivered.

Will have a read of all the resources you linked to as well, now I've had the problem it would be nice to be better informed for the future.

Cheers.
