Q: OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.5 Update causes Kernel Panic

I updated yesterday to the new v 10.8.5.

During the update my Mac Book Pro restarted. And did not succeed to boot anymore. I ran all the time in a Kernel fault and the system rebooted.

I managed to start the mac in safe mode, disabled all auto start programs but nothing worked.

After one hour of trying I just restored the entire Mac from my timemachine backups.

Has anyone the same problems?

Thanks!

Sebastian

Ok, cleaned those third parties stuff, now it reboots fine!

    Thank you.

I then installed VirtualBox 4.2.18 again, no problem booting, so it was one of the the others, who knows which one....

I had a similar persistent kernel panic after the 10.8.5 update was applied. I also had Intel HAXM and NoMachine installed. Using a safe mode boot, I uninstalled Intel HAXM but still encountered the kernel panic upon reboot. Using safe mode again, I uninstalled NoMachine and that eliminated the kernel panic, and now my machine appears to be working fine.

Here are the instructions for uninstalling NoMachine (see section 4): http://www.nomachine.com/documents/client/install.php

When the kernel panic occurred, there was information displayed in text, but then my Mac would reboot in about 3 seconds, so it was very difficult to read it. From what little I could read in 3 seconds, the keyword "nxusb" stuck out. It turns out that nxusb is one of the kernel extensions of NoMachine. Looks like the version of NoMachine that I had installed is not compatible with 10.8.5.

I also just searched the NoMachine support forums and found this: http://www.nomachine.com/news-read.php?idnews=386

Same problem here with the nomachine nxusb kext and an imac that would restart too quickly to read the error message.  I wasted a lot of time tracking down the kext files in safe mode  and removing them the hard way.   Thanks for the links.

Same problem here as well, Updated to 10.8.5 and bam! Kernal panics!! Booted up in safe mode and deleted all of the nomachine 4 stuff from my machine. Rebooted, all seems well at the moment.

    Thank You!!!

Hi I have been having the same problem. After updating to 10.8.5 I get a kernel panic upon restart (it says that it was unable to install the updates successfully). So far I have restored my machine twice from my time machine backup. It is currently restored so I can only give the output of Etrecheck now. I am just wondering what I need to remove to avoid the kernel panics? So far I have deleted all the divx files. Is there anything else glaring that might be causing the problem before I redownload the 10.8.5 update?

I am hoping that I can jump on board here for help as well.

Mine said that it was unable to complete the update.  Then I got the panic.  I snapped a photo on my iphone of what it said, and I can transcribe that if necessary.

I didn't know what to do and was in a rush, so I restored from Time Machine backup.  Now I am back on 10.8.2.

Here is what I got just now from EtreCheck.  Perhaps one of you can help me find the  problem?

What is "the panic"? Each one is different. It would be best to start your own thread on the topic.

I suspect the fault probably lies in these 3rd party kernel extensions:

              com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn          (6.0.1)

              com.rogueamoeba.InstantOnCore          (6.0.1)

Same issue here. Did the update and kernel panic unable to boot. Was unable to get machine into safe mode either. Made disk image from Disk Utility, currently reinstalling OS.

got "unable to find driver for this platform"

    and

Mac OS version said "not yet set"

First time I've had a kernel panic on a Mac in 8 years.
