Unable to install software updates

I've now tried to install software updates 3 times. I follow instructions, I'm informed that computer is gonna restart, and when it does, that a gray bar will appear to inform me on the installation, but it never does. More than anything, I'm trying to update itunes version so I can download the iOS 7 software for my iphone. HELP!!!
