iOS 7 Music App sorting issues

Hello there,

I'm starting this discussion to express my displeasure with some changes in the Music app that have removed some key functionalities that I had come to rely upon.

First of all, there are some artists in my library with many albums. In iOS 6, accessing those artist's albums was easy. You would click on the artist tab, go to the artist and it would show a list of the albums. Then, you could choose an album and go right to those songs. In iOS 7, this has completely changed. Now, there's no longer an albums view under artists. You have to scroll song by song to get to the newer releases.

For instance, I'm a huge fan of Pearl Jam and have 60 albums of theirs (9 studio, the rest all live records). Now, to get to the latest, I have to spend 30 seconds scrolling all the way down the list. That's not efficient at all. The way it was before — you get a list of albums once you click on the artist, then click on an album to get the songs — should never have been changed.

Second, I consider myself a power user and sort all my albums using the "sort album" tag in iTunes. Previously, that carried over both over syncing and iTunes Match. Now, it ignores it completely. Even my old, trusty iPod Classic still pays attention to this!

I understand that most people don't set their sort order, but for those of us who do — and have spent tons of time doing it — why is this no longer the case?

I spoke with a senior technician yesterday and let him know of these issues. He documented them and is sending them directly to a programming engineer at Apple. I have his name, phone number and contact info and intend to follow up.

He agreed that iOS 7 should be adding functionality — not taking it away! The other thing the senior technician said to me is that the more people call and complain about something, the greater the chance that it will be rectified.

I did so in a very calm, respectful manner and he was very receptive to my concerns. SO, is anyone else frustrated about this? IF so, please post here!

Also, my suggestion to anyone else who feels disappointed in this removed functionality is to call in to Apple Care support and express your concerns in much the same way i did.

That way, if we make our collective voices heard, they'll reintroduce the functionalities we had in the first place.

I have scheduled a call with a technician for this afternoon, and will discuss my concerns as well. Let's hope that if enough people raise the issue, it will be addressed. I will post a follow up once I've spoken with Apple.

Another issue I have noticed but forgot to mention and this goes back to using Music through blue tooth in my car ... in iOS6, whatever album/song I left off on would be there, right on the car's display screen ready to go, the next time I went to listen in the car. No longer! I get a blank screen on the car's display and I have to go and choose whatever I want to listen to all over again. This is really so inconvenient especially if I decide to switch from XM Satellite to my Music player. I have steering wheel controls to switch through Satellite, terrestrial radio and blue tooth. The whole idea is to not take my eyes off the road, right? Well, Music has to wait now until I'm at a red light or I decide to listen before I even drive off and make my choice. This wholle Music issue is imprortant to me. So much so that, heaaven forbid, I'm looking into a Galaxy now. I'm totally out of my contract with AT&T next month. I'm doing my research now to figure out if it's cost effective to drop the iPhone altogether. So disappointed.

Thanks again to the person who started this thread. It's been an interesting read for sure. :-)

Cathco, you're welcome. I just had to start this thread. For me, the iPhone is (rather, WAS) my main music player. Everything else I had on the phone was just icing on the cake. Now, I find myself reaching for my iPod Classic that I bought in 2009 when I want to listen to music! This is just unforgivable.

The good news is this is getting attention: The more of us that post here, provide feedback to Apple, the greater the chance we'll see our old Music app go back to the way we liked.

Another bit of news: This topic has just received exposure from the Mainstream Media! The New Yorker published a story on this yesterday entitled "Why iOS7 Gets Music Playing Wrong."

We should all thank Ben Greenman for bringing more attention to this.

Again, I really hope they fix this. I have held off buying an iPhone 5S because of this and will stick with what I have until everything is back the way it should be.

When there are lots of replys from people experiencing the same thing, sometimes Apple will look at a thread on these forums and take the feedback from there. Remember battery-gate with iOS 6.X?

But if you really want to be heard, you need to submit your feedback through the Feedback page Apple has set up for it.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/

If hundreds of people submit feedback there it might get something done.

Really pleased to find this thread tonight and realise I'm not alone. Logged my feedback via apple a few days ago, though reported it as a "bug" as I was struggling to believe any idiot would consciously "design" this intentionally. Clearly apple developers are not music fans. Come on guys sort it out! The only solution I've found is dig out the old handset which doesn't have this idiotic ios7 installed on it.

Just want to add my displeasure with the new app as well. Having to scroll through all the songs in an album once you are under the artist is a joke. For us music lovers who have multiple albums from an artist this makes it horrible to find what you are after.

Other things that have made this a major downgrade are

1. The inability to play podcasts through it.

2. Having to go to control centre to switch audio target instead of doing it locally within the app.

3. Bluetooth dramas. Fixed the skip issues by resetting, but still cannot pause.

4. Not having the option to disable cover art in artist list. Why make the list so long unnecessarily. Especially if you don't have or don't care about cover art.

5. Not visually easy to distinguish an letter change. Apple should add a little line seperator between letters to make it really easy and simple to see where you are. I have attached an example.

Overall I really like new feel of IOS 7, seems to work good on the iPhone 5. I just wish the homepage didn't look like rainbow vomit, wish we had a choice of default app icons and this **** music app stuff up.

Come on Apple, please allow us music lovers to have some choice in how we sort our music and display it.

I'm having a similar problem with the situation where I want to hear a song, but can't remember which album it's in. In ios 6, I could select an artist. At the top of the screen was the entry All Albums. Tapping that gave me a list of songs in all the albums in alphabetical order. Finding the song I wanted to hear was a snap.

I saw the Search function, but that is limited in usefulness because it searches the entire music database, not just the artist I want to search.

I'm very disappointed with the Music app. I agree that an update should enhance functionality as opposed to removing useful features.

Hi again all,

Yesterday, gIg7 recommended the free app Lagu as an alternative.

I just tried it and it's beautiful. It's pretty much exactly like our old Music app in iOS 6. I have downloaded it and it has now replaced the sorry excuse that Apple has made of our old, beloved music player.

Now, there are limitations. The first, and biggest, is that it cannot play iTunes Match tracks over the air. Essentially, you have to download them first via the music app and then they'll be available.

This is by no means an elegant or permanent solution, but until Apple gets its act together with our music, it's a free alternative that can tide us over.

Thanks again for the recommendation gIg7. If anyone else has any other apps as suggestions — especially those that *do* have access to iTunes Match — please let us know.

Concerning Lagu, it's very nice, but has anyone tried saving its queue as a playlist? It displays a dialog, but I found no way to bring up the keyboard, and when I press OK, it complains that I didn't enter a name. I see no way to enter the name, so I'm wondering if the feature is broken, or maybe it's unlocked when you pay.

Sep 28, 2013 1:18 AM in response to glg7

Thanks glg7. Great suggestion. Have tried it and works great.

I have also provided my feedback through apple's official channel so they can hopefully take note of everyones concerns and fix this app or at least make it as good as it was.

Another thing I have noticed which is a little anoying is if you have many albums by an artist and select an album to start playing (after clicking on the artist first), when it gets to the end, it continues on playing the next album once the first finishes. If you have 20 albums under an artist and you click on the first it will play them all. So now you have to select it through albums, if you can remember the names of all 2000+ albums on your iPhone. I know I can't, but I know the artists.

Looking forward to this app being fixed by apple, but if not at least we have Lagu and I'm sure there will be many more copy apps with a modern layout, but useful features.

Fingers crossed.

Like everyone else on this thread, I am very unhappy with the changes to the music function in IOS 7, and I have followed the advice to send my complaints in to Apple. I really do not like how albums are now sorted according to their title (so that "Abby Road" comes before "Beggar's Banquet"), which makes it very hard to find specific albums by a specific artist. And I really don't like how the icons have been reduced to these tiny things which are hard to read.

But it seems to me that there is method in this madness. Apple seems to be really privileging playing individual songs rather than albums. In other words, the music function now reflects the "unbundling" logic behind iTunes. It's certainly a move that serious music collectors--as many in this thread seem to be--won't like. Yet I guess that we are not the target audience here.
