Q: Find my Friends doesn't work after IOS 7 update

We use find my friends for our entire family to monitor kids locations, etc.  Since updating to IOS 7, one of the phones only shows it's location sporadically - otherwise says location not available.

Have verified location services are turned on, nothing is blocked, etc.

This phone was updated to IOS 7 over wifi (vs. through iTunes) - one other phone had some minor (unrelated) issues after updating over wifi that were resolved by doing a factory reset & updating from iTunes - wondering if that could be cause of the issue here as well.  Anyone else encountering issues with FMF?

This is a common misconception. Just because an app is visible in the multitasking bar doesn't necessarily mean it is running.  In iOS it is actually quit hard to make an app consume a large amount of resources in the background.  As soon as it tries, the OS will kill it off.

I dont think that's completely true. Google maps for example seems to eat through my battery quickly if I leave it running in the background. My impression is that Find Freinds does the same thing when i accidentally leave it running inthe background although not to the same degree.

is it possible that apps that make a ot of use of location services are an exception to what they are saying in that article.

While this is interesting its not really relavent to the discussion here. If you have a family of five with five phones there are going to be times when the app will have been force quit inadvertantly. It defeats the purpose of non-intrussive monitoring if we all have to call our family memebr and remind them to turn on the app periodically

Sorry, Hadnt finished reading the article. It does in fact say that certain apps which track our location do stay active in bacground and use power. Not sure how this applies to the find friends app but again as stated above this app will not always be running no matter how conscientious we all are about trying to leave it on. This glitch needs to be fixed or this apps utility drop off markedly

Great idea ! Went in the AppStore myself to put comments and give a one-star rating. Maybe that will draw some attention ? As I mentioned there, the app is free and now, we really get our money's worth ....

I just contacted Apple support and what they told me is that the FMF app is not theirs. Its produced by a third party and the problem is that the app has not been updated for iOS7. They suggested that we try and contact the vendor and make them aware of the problem and ask if there is an update in the works.

Not sure why they told you that... in iTunes It says "Find My Friends - By Apple"

This is ashame that Apple is telling us to contact the 3rd party when Apple themselves have endorse this product as theirs to begin with. I hope they are contacting the vendor and make them aware of the problem and and ask if there will be an update.

We know they don't make hardware now they're saying they don't write software! Very funny :)

I have spent days trying to figure out why the Find My Friends app will not work.

I have accused my teenager of turning off the follow button.

Test it on my other teen iphone and it is not working either.

So I am glad I found this thread and I can quit accusing my teenager that I'm blocked!

I hope this app bug is resolved immediately!

Great idea to give negative reviews on the App Store for FMF.  Make sure you send in feedback to Apple AND also rate FMF as a 1* on the App Store.

For what its worth I also emailed Brian Tong. He is the guy who covers Apple product news over at CNET. DOubt it will do much but if this glitch can make the news the way the screw up in Apple Maps did maybe something will get done quicker. Along those lines if anyone here knows how to use social media to get the word out have at it and trash apple all over the place for this screw up. The more publicity it gets the better off we all are.

    Hello all,

just wanted to mention: I have the same problem on two iPhones and two iPads. I was on the developer preview program, and while I was testing the betas on my iPhone 5 and iPad 3, my wife couldn't see me on Find My Friends.

I presumed that they would fix it for the release candidate of iOS 7. Well, that didn't happen. Now, the bug is bi-directional, and none of our 4 devices on iOS 7 have a functional FMF app...

Come on Apple, you had at least four months to make this silly thing right!

    Oh, that's just perfect...

One of the most valuable features (for me, obviously) is just ruined? Really? C'mon Apple, I don't see a problem on copying Android's features, but if you'll start copying it's flaws I might simply go for the "real deal" in this matter then, so I don't need to wait for the latest bugs. ¬¬

My wife, Daughter, and I all have iPhone 5's and updated to iOS 7 on release day. I noticed immediately that my wife and daughter 's location were not showing up as they did in iOS 6. I confirmed that all location based setting were on and also found that it only worked when they both had the app open. Interestingly enough, my mother has a 4s and updated to iOS 7 a couple of days after release day. I can still open the app on my phone and see her location. It is not running in the background on her phone. Yesterday, I set up my old iPhone 4 with iOS 7 for my grand daughter to play games while she's here, connects to wifi only, and the phones location only shows up when the app is open. I can not explain why my moms 4s still works as before.
