trying to update the software on my gen 2 iPod from 2.2 to 4.2 and I keep getting an error message that the software can not be restored on my device. my iTunes software is current.

Are you sure you do not have a 1g (original iPod tpouch)? Those can only go to 2.2 via iTunes
A 1G iPod can go to iOS 2.2 via iTunes and iOS 3.1.3 via

The 1G does no have volume buttons on the upper left edge.
I'm sure the device is a gen 2 it's a 8 GB and iTunes indicates it can be upgraded to 4.2 iSO software
