New iPhone 5s Overheating and Losing Battery Life

I just received the new iPhone 5s, and it's been on for all of 30 minutes, during which I restored the phone via iCloud backup and reinstalled my apps, etc. In these 30 minutes, the phone overheated and dropped down to 40% battery. Any reason as to why this happened? I've already closed all the apps that were open, locked it, and put it in to charge.

The phone getting warm and the battery dropping that much make sense together, since more battery usage = more heat, but the cause is unknown. I've noticed that when signal strength is low or cellular is on instead of wifi, it works harder to receive and transmit data. What kinda network are you using? Oh, plus, the way iCloud continually restores in the background could be causing some of that heat too.

When you say overheated, do you just mean that it got warm, or that you actually got a heat warning error message? Some warming is normal during charging or heavy activity, but it's hard to say. Most likely cause would be some sort of stuck app running in a loop, maxing out the processor, generating heat, and draining the battery. Sounds like you're on the right track. If it's still happening, may want to try restoring as new (without loading your backup), then use it for a bit to see if it's behaving normally without any of the old data/apps.

this is all above iOS 7.0.2 issue

drained fast battery not because any iphone problem it is software on iOS7 specially please double check your privatecy location this default set to use GPRS to keep track your possition location which you also could easier check it back where you going before also few more add on GPRS maps, location you have to turn it off otherwise each time you press your iphone at once time this apps will doing there work at back ground.

if you disable this function i can saying your battery save up to 20% more power energy in all iphone model sorry for 3G user cause iOS 7 is end user

Had the same issue.

- I was running on low battery. So I killed all the apps and put 5S to sleep with 19% battery.

- After a while an alert popup of a low battery sign of 10% came. I forgot to hit OK.

- After a few minutes when I picked up the 5S it was terribly hot with battery showing 1%.

What paopaowell describes is not causing the massive battery drain. The one time location checking (GPRS) starts the GPS for a second or two and then turns it off. That won't cause the massive battery drain.

Hi I'm also experiencing from heating up but sometimes and then it comes down.

I kno it supposed to heat up while playing games, but this is also while sending email reading news etc.

My 4s use to heat when I use 3G n browse a lot, maybe it's the same with 5s on LTE.

The battery was fine at starting, but no I'm even scared to use it while I'm out so it survived till end of the day.

I recently installed that nike app which uses the m7 chip to try it out, do u think that app might be the issue ??

Dont be afraid it will be solved automatically, its not only the problem of iphone 5s/c, it is a bug of IO7 coz i got iphone 5 with the same issue when ma battery came 20% its 1 % goes like a mint either you are using or not, so cool it will be solved with upgrading and do not charge your iphone with laptop or desktop or other like car kit charge it with the original charger of it came in the box.

Kind Regards,

I experience severe overheating mainly when charging but it gets worse using FaceTime. I actually had to end the FaceTime and turn the phone off it was that hot. I burnt my fingers holding it. I've also experienced the phone shutting down when it shows there is 10% battery life. I'm thinking of contacting customer service and getting it seen to as it's becoming extremely dangerous.

So has anyone heard of a solution for this yet? I have an appointment today at the Apple store, but the phone is unuseable due to battery drain. The heat issue is very noticable, and I can feel it through my shorts pocket. I have erased and reset the phone mutiple times with the same result each time. This is my first iPhone after being on comapny-provided Android products, but I have been a personal iPad and MAC user for years. Never had this experience with Apple products, or Motorola phones, before! 😠

The solution for me was the software patch, which was available for download the afternoon that I posted this question back in September of 2013. I never have overheating problems with my iPhone 5S anymore, unless I'm running all of my apps at once or playing with a high-power app (like an RPG-style app). If anyone else is still having problems after the patches and the upgrades, you should just go to the Apple store and see if you have a defective part. If the part is defective, depending on your Apple store, you might be able to replace it for free or for a lower price (it will be free if you have a warantee).

If you're burning your hands - if your phone is not usable - then go to the Apple store and get it checked out. It's not overheating for no reason. It might be a hardware problem.

I have had my iphone 5 for 18months and all was well until about a week ago. The phone started running abnormally hot and lost charge very quickly....full charge gone in about 4 hours when it used to be 2 days. I did the full restore and went through the diagnostics telling me that they got overheating errors. No kidding, it was generating its own heat. I have tried a number of operating scenarios and it appears that the phone runs cool and keeps a charge in a Wi-Fi environment but it runs hot and discharges quickly in the 4G environment. This just started happening suddenly last week. Any ideas?
