iPhone 5 with iOS 7 randomly shuts off

Apple used to be quite respected but, the last 18 months, it's feels like they've lost the way... Constant issues like this and then there's the very poor maps...

I've got two issues at the moment, this power issue and another where a purchased audio book is lost in the music app.

It's like the early 2000s again.....when companies promised the world but delivered half-baked solutions.

I use iTunes a lot, so I feel a little trapped now by apple. But, all I need is a cheap iPod for that then perhaps I'll go down the samsung route....

Or apple could just fix this, just admit there's an issue, get someone on it and fix this...easy.

At east give us the respect of acknowledging the issue.

Do Apple even read this?

I will share my $.02 FWIW.

I got a used iPhone5 about 2 months ago. It had a full applecare contract on it, and was already on ios7 so I have no comparison to 6.

I had the same issue as many here. Battery would get to anywhere between 40% and 15% and then ANY type of load on it would cause it to shut off. Taking a picture, turning on the light, receiving a call (ringer or vibrate). If I tried to turn it back on immediately, I would get the "needs charging" symbol. If I left it off for 2-3 minutes and then powered it back on, it would come up fine and show what ever percentage the battery had before it shut off. It would then be usable again for an indeterminate amount of time. Sometimes 5 minutes sometimes hours, depending on load and circumstances.

I went to the apple store and the tech ran some diags on it. He said the battery looked fine. He said there were a few "firmware/software" upgrades he could do that "should take care of the issue". He did them and when I got home I restored my phone from a backup. Problem was a little better, bit not solved. By that I mean the battery would get to a lower state before shutting off. Anywhere between 28% and 11%.

He had also told me that if it DIDN'T solve the issue, to reset the device back to factory defaults, and add my apps in one at a time to see if it was an app. I don't use many apps, so this was not a big deal. I did this and it made no difference. (I didn't thin it would).

Ultimately, I took it back in and they gave me a replacement phone. It has been fine since. it goes down to 1% stays for a while then shuts off. As expected.

I recently updated to IOS 7.04 on my IPAD and iphone 5. My phone keeps going off several times a day even when connected to the charger. The black screen displays and the apple insignia comes up....very frustrating. I have reset it to factory settings and it is still happening. I've gone to the apple store and since my phone is out of warranty they want me to purchase a new one for $299. I've called apple technicians via phone and they had me restore ios 7.04 by the computer and I'm still having the same issues. I'm going to try purchasing a new battery before eating the cost for a new phone. Even further, since updating to ios 7.94 for my Ipad I have lost battery power. I used to only have to recharge my ipad every 2 days, now it's every day and my ipad loses 20% of its battery efficiency in 30 minutes. I think this new software has severely impacted the batteries and Apple needs to address this issue before we all jump on the Samsung bandwagon for lack of being able to use our products effectively.

I tried to fix my iphone 5 using the methods described here. First i did a restore and then reput the backup and the problem has occured again. After, i did an update of ios 7.0.4 using the method described by ahs70 an today the phone died at 16%, after i was outside at around 0 C. After a few minutes being dead, i was able to reboot it and it without putting it at charge and showed again 16%. Now it is still functioning-the percentage is 14%. After a few minutes, it suddenly dropped to 6%... i am almost convinced is a software issue, but in my opinion is really very strange and unpleasant-apple should do something. For ahs70-after a few weeks of the update-still the phone is ok-no problems ?

A few weeks ago I proposed a solution to the battery problems where I claimed that it would solve all issues. Now, after having used my iphone a few weeks longer I must admit that it didn't clear all problems.

When I charge the iphone to 100% with the external charger (not usb on the computer, don' use that much), it runs down to 1% without premature shutdowns. In doing so the battery meter counts downs normally (more or less) without the sudden jumps, thus looking rather fine to me.

But when I interrupt this complete charge/discharge cycle by connecting it to the charger or the computer (which also charges) and disconnect it before it is loaded to 100% (ie. when doing just a backup), I get the problem of early shut downs again. A complete charge cycle will solve them again, though.

So in conclusion, the problem is not solved. And I also am totally convinced it is a software issue. Maybe 7.1 will bring an improvement.

Yeah, my phone has just started doing this as well. I thought it was strange that I needed to keep plugging it in at college, the battery seemly draining faster than it ever had before.

All the apps I had open was bbc news and spotify on offline mode. It went from 100% to 34% in the space of half an hour.

Today, however, my respect for Apple has reached a new low. My phone was at 45% and suddently Spotify stopped working. I thought it was kind of strange that my phone had turned off since it hadn't given me a 'your phone is low in battery' message so I turned it on again.

My phone did this twice before giving me the 'you need to plug me in' screen and even then after about a minute it turned on and told me I had 28%... then 17 and then 12 before turning off again. This has never happened to my phone before, and considering the time of year I doubt it's going to be fixed anytime soon. I can't even switch to the phone I've been looking at (which is a Sony) because the contact doesn't run out until August.

I really really don't want to have to deal with this phone until then :/

I have been experiencing all of the same symptoms described in this thread and others across the web while using a 15 month old iPhone 5 running the latest version of iOS 7. I systematically stepped through each recommended solution one at a time to see if it would fix the random shutdowns. My last step was to put it in recovery mode and restore it from that state - still, no joy.

Finally, I took it to the Apple Store and wala, a bad battery (imagine that). I had them replace the battery (20 minutes) and that fixed the problem. My iPhone 5, running the latest version of iOS 7, is back to normal with rock solid stability and no random shutdowns.

iOS 7 created the problem? Nope, Bad battery was the culprit? Yup.

A week or so ago, I restored my IPhone 5 to factory settings, just like a brand new phone, then I restored it from my pc to my last back up, backed to the pc up a few minutes earlier.

During the quite long process I noticed some banner saying a patch will be installed.

The freshly downloaded iOS 7.0.4 seems to have been stable with no shutdowns to date.

I wish I'd seen what that "patch" was....!

I'm having the same issue. It started doing it on 30th November, after I had updated to iOS 7.04

I was out with my friends and trying to text a friend to meet us and the phone decided to just shut itself off when I still had 25% battery left?!

It's just done it again and it was at 14%. I've never had a phone shut itself off because of battery until it gets under the 10% mark.

Same here. As soon as I updated to the latest iOS in early December, my phone has been turning off and most of the time, there is nothing I can do to turn it back on. When I have tried to "recover" it in itunes, the apple logo and progress bar appear on my phone but then nothing happened even after several hours.

I have an old 4G and, while I have experienced some slowdown with iOS, nothing like this has happened until this latest update.

I was beginning to think that I was going to have to upgrade to a 5s, but with all of the people with 5s phones who are having this problem, there seems to be no reason to upgrade (i.e., this is a softeware not a hardware problem).

I wish I had never upgraded to iOS 7. I use very few of the new features and now, my phone is no longer usable. As a business owner, I can not afford to use iOS7 or, for that matter, the iPhone. This experience has ruined my respect for Apple and they have lost my business as a result. Good luck Apple!

i have literally been tearing my hair out

i have an iphone 4 and it has been fine since the day of purchase, it has been well looked after, imaculate you might say,

like 99% of the people who have posted, my troubles started right after i upgraded to IOS7, at first i thought it was a coincidence, but there is absolutely no way that is the case

initially, my phone began to turn itself off ONLY when i had it in my pocket, i thought perhaps there was an issue with the "thermostat"...perhaps it was getting to hot in my pocket and shutting off,

then i started having trouble with recharging my phone, it literally decides to charge when it wants to, it acknowledges that it has been plugged in and tells you it is charging, however the battery percentage does not increase, sometimes totally crashing until you remove the charger, it simply resets it's self reverting back to the black page with the silver apple logo

these problems have gotten 100% worse in the last two weeks, it doesn't matter where my phone is now, pocket, on charge, on the table...it will randomly reset or turn its self off completely leaving you TOTALLY unware until you attempt to look at your phone,

i have tried (what i thought was everything),

restoring my phone numerous times,

i have been that frustrated with this, i have even jailbroken my phone to see if that would replace the potential faulty software/firmware...this however also failed

my phone is well out of its warrenty and my contract unfortunately is not up until may,.

as of today, i have turned off my "app background refresh", hopefully this will help,

if anyone has anymore suggestions, i will be eternally greatful

As I mentioned above, my experience was similar to yours except that the initial i0S 7 downloads did not cause my phone to crash. It was only the last/latest update that did it. Now, unlike yours, mine will no longer work at all. I can't even turn it on. I went back to Verizon today where I got the phone and even though my 2 yr contract had expired, I had an insurance policy so the phone is being replaced for free (a new iPhone 4, not a 5).

Here is my plan when the new iPhone 4. First, I will go back to the earliest version of iOS7 that I can. The first several releases of 7 seemed to work on my last phone. They weren't great, but they did not shut the phone down. Second, during my many, many web searches regarding this problem, there were a number of articles which made some recommendations on changes to your settings which MIGHT help. One of the articles was " When iOS 7 Attacks:Help for iPhone 4 and 4s Owners" by Adriana Lee dated 10/15/13. Here is a link to it.

Whether any of the recommended fixes will help, I have NO idea, but it is worth a try. Also, if you can still access your phone in iTunes AND if your phone worked fine on an earlier version of 7, you might try to revert back to that. I was never able to do that with my old phone because when I tried to "recover" the operating system, the phone would lock and not respond.

Please note that I am NOT an expert on this by any means. I have shared my experience in the hope that it might help you and/or others. I wish you luck and I hope Apple will address this issue ASAP because they are abandoning many, many customers, even, from what I have read, their newest ones with the iPhone 5.

I was doing some additional checking about reverting back to an earlier version of 7 and it appears that I am not correct. From my additonal reading, it is not possible to "revert" once you have updated (unless you have a backup of your iPhone with the older version saved on your computer in iTunes which you might have done when you updated the last time). Of course, like I said before, I am not an expert on this by any means and there may be a method which an expert could recommend, but that's definitely not me. If reverting back is not an option, I would try the article I referenced and see if any of those setting changes will help. You might also research other similar articles and hopefully some of those changes will help. Again, I hope you are successful.
