Dec 31, 2013 7:08 AM in response to quickXstarby whitewasher,I was doing some additional checking about reverting back to an earlier version of 7 and it appears that I am not correct. From my additonal reading, it is not possible to "revert" once you have updated (unless you have a backup of your iPhone with the older version saved on your computer in iTunes which you might have done when you updated the last time). Of course, like I said before, I am not an expert on this by any means and there may be a method which an expert could recommend, but that's definitely not me. If reverting back is not an option, I would try the article I referenced and see if any of those setting changes will help. You might also research other similar articles and hopefully some of those changes will help. Again, I hope you are successful.

Dec 31, 2013 10:00 PM in response to erostroby dancing_galaxy,This is unbelievable. My phone just died at 50%?! On a New Year's Eve. I don't know how not to write without cursing right now. Apple's useless customer service tried to fix it over phone and ended up destroying/deleting my photo album a month ago... Not that I lost my previous photos of my life, the problem is not fixed either. I really can't wait my contract to be over with the phone company so I can get rid of this phone.
I tried to reach a customer service manager that I talked before but he is not returning my phone call or email... I wrote an email before too mentioning the problem and pointing out this forum to show that it's happening to many people ... Well done Apple. This is the worst/evil brand I've ever seen. And I worked for years in marketing and I 'm doing PhD in marketing right now. I don't know how to vent off. I wish my problem could be solved but I guess I can just try to do bad word of mouth about Apple and that's about it for now...

Dec 31, 2013 10:03 PM in response to dancing_galaxyby gail from maine,Have you tried resetting the phone (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Silver Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays, see if the issue is resolved.
Cheers,
GB

Dec 31, 2013 10:11 PM in response to gail from maineby dancing_galaxy,When it dies randomly you mean? Does it help to turn it back on -but not solves the real problem?
That will still help in case of emergencies though...
Thanks-

Dec 31, 2013 11:37 PM in response to dancing_galaxyby Dazman63,Guys,
I do not think it is ios7! I had the same issues as everyone else is describing here. My issue was due to a faulty battery and as some have described here their batteries tested fine, initially, then the battery turned out to be the problem. Apple replaced my phone and I have not had any issues. Actually my phone lasts forever now.
It's not the ios, it's the battery.

Jan 2, 2014 2:28 PM in response to Dazman63by whitewasher,Battery may have been an issue for my phone since I owned it for more than 2 years when this started happening. However, I have been reading that some 5 users have had very similar experiences. Also, my phone was fine before I downloaded 7.0.4. That seems to be too much of a conincidence. At one point while I was having difficulties, but before my phone shut down completely, I had it plugged into my computer and drawing power from that, but still shut itself off. Based on that, I don't think it is quite so simple as just a battery issue. I think iOS 7.0.4 requires a lot more battery power and has initial settings that put a LOT more strain on the battery.
I wound up turning in my 4G and "upgrading" to the 5c because I could do it for free and get a new warranty on the phone in the process. Since the new phone was running on 7.0.2, I stayed with that and have not gone to 7.0.4 even though the operating system keeps "alerting" me that I need to upgrade. What I have noted since the upgrade is that the battery runs down at an extraordinarily fast rate. With my 4g, I could go several days without charging the battery. Now, I can't even get through half the day without charging. That IS a problem but I find it difficult to believe that Apple is now using a poorer battery in the 5c than they used in the 4g.
I think the battery use is due to iOS 7. I have turned off automatic alerts and updates for my all my apps so the phone doesn't constantly search for new data and use power doing so. However, I am not sure yet if this will help. I am also not sure if this adjustment will result in my loss of critical updates or notices which make the settings unacceptable. Bottom line, iOS 7 is a power hungry operating system and users who need longer battery life due to their work or lifestyles will have to adjust the settings on their phones to balance their needs.

Jan 3, 2014 1:04 AM in response to Dazman63by DJG77,I've had my iPhone5 since July.
The phone started doing its random shut off trick a month ago.
That means it worked fine for 4 months and funnily enough only started having this problem after I downloaded ios7.04. As have many other people.
I find that far too much of a coincidence to be just a faulty battery. It also seems odd that we would 'all' have faulty batteries.
Plus one diagnosis does not necessarily fit all.

Jan 3, 2014 1:38 AM in response to erostroby Jim395,It's been about three weeks since I restored my IPhone 5 to factory settings, just like a brand new phone, then I restored it from my pc to my last back up, backed to the pc up a few minutes earlier.
The freshly downloaded iOS 7.0.4 seems to have been stable with no shutdowns to date.
Would Apple fix an issue without changing the iOS version?

Jan 3, 2014 2:33 AM in response to erostroby mcpat1,My phone has started to show the shut down screen when I've not tried to turn it off and it also locks itself mid use, as if someone else is using it. It's getting more frequent and very annoying- anyone else have this issue and know what to do? (Phone has latest updates etc)

Jan 3, 2014 6:59 AM in response to whitewasherby Dazman63,My phone started acting up after I updating to iOS 7. This went on for about a month before I called Apple and they told me to restore the phone as new, which I did and the problem still persisted. Keep in mind I did not download any apps. I just added a few contacts and configured my email. The issues I were experiencing are identical to the ones listed here. My wife has also been having issues with her iPhone 5, but they are not quite as bad as what everyone else is experiencing. She now runs her battery down to 0% once a week and this has helped a lot.
My phone was replaced by Apple and maybe it was just a coincidence that my battery was going after the release of IOS 7 . That said, my new phone has never performed better. My phone at the end of the day, after 10hrs of light use, is usually sitting at around 70%. Before it would be down to 30% and my phone outlasts my wife's. My son's iPhone 4S was randomly shutting off as well before iOS 7 and then he dropped his phone and he bought a new 4S and he has never had any issues iOS 7.
My phone would shut off sometimes below 50%, and many times below 20%. The phone would sit there and be at 52% and a few minutes later drop to 11%. I'd reboot it and it would shoot back up to 48%. Sometimes I'd go to take a photo and it would shutoff. I could leave it for a few minutes and then I could reboot it or sometimes I'd have to plug it back into get it going.
Maybe there are a number of issues going on. What I can tell you is that the replacement phone performs better than my other phone when it was new.

Jan 3, 2014 1:32 PM in response to Jim395by Jim395,Oh, and there it is.....
I spoke too soon...shut off at 6% it started aftera while but just able to boot up to the home screen then it shut off again for good with an indicated 6% agian.
For goodness sake Apple do something to help...
It's very embarrassing for the brand now....
Do you care?
Thing is, word of mouth is a very very string marketing tool..and if you're leaving us to wallow in your mistakes, it will be your eventual mistake...
You have lost your shine, Apple...

Jan 3, 2014 2:39 PM in response to Jim395by whitewasher,Just to set the record straight, "resetting" worked initially with my 4g, but only once. After that, I could hold both buttons down for 30 seconds or more and nothing! What was interesting is that several times after trying to reset the phone, I would press the "on" button and the phone would miraculously come to life. However, that stopped working after a little while.
The last time that the phone turned on was when I tried a "recovery". I had given up on the recovery because the progress bar remained completely unfilled after several hours, so I disconnected it and suddenly the phone came on. I backed it up as soon as this happened and was getting ready to try to reinstall the operating system but the phone shut down and I could never get it started again.
As mentioned above, I now have a new 5c (because I could get it for free) and I have stayed with the 7.0.2 operating system. I have NO intention of risking the upgrade to 7.0.4.
I have also managed to extend the battery life by making all of the changes recommended in the Battery Life Pro app listed under "tips". By making these changes, I went through the entire day with minimal battery draw down (about 25%). Please note that I am not a big app user and so I typically don't use up a lot of battery life unless I am on a long call. However, the first day I had the 5c and before I changed the settings to extend the battery life, I had gone through almost 50% of the battery life in about 2 hours and I hadn't done anything!
I am NOT sure that the battery life changes I made will help people with 7.0.4 that are experiencing shutdowns. It might, but in my layman's opinion, I think there is something in 7.0.4 that is causing the shutdowns. The big question I have is why is this happening to some phones and not others?

Jan 3, 2014 9:25 PM in response to erostroby andrewkw,To throw a wrench into this whole discussion, this has been happening to me for a few months even though I never updated to iOS 7.

Jan 4, 2014 2:30 PM in response to erostroby iphoner_ist,I have the same problem and reloaded ios7.04 but the problem continues - even worse than before!
It cannot be a battery issue as stated in some posts, this seems to a software problem.
Really dissatisfied with Apple's so-called "customer service" because no solution is offered. I've been an Apple fan until this problem but I really think of choosing android (most probably Samsung) unless the company solves the problem or changes the phone. I cannot understand the ignorance of Apple to such a critical issue.
